Ford Fiesta ST launched in Malaysia
Ford’s compact hot hatch, the Fiesta ST, is officially launched in Malaysia with a confirmed price of RM149,888 on-the-road with insurance for private registration in Peninsula Malaysia. Additional shipping costs bump the price up to RM154,688 under the same terms for East Malaysia buyers.
Featuring the 1.6-litre EcoBoost T4 engine as seen in the Kuga as well as the Volvo S60, the Fiesta ST has access to outputs of 180hp and 240Nm, which it channels to its front wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission. An overboost function in the turbocharger raises maximum torque to 290Nm, albeit for a limited span of only 17 seconds. The engine is also fitted with a sound symposer that transmits additional engine noise into the cabin.
Unlike the bigger cars in which we’ve seen this engine, the Fiesta ST is a much lighter vehicle, and with only 1,200kg of metal to lug, it is able to complete the century dash in 6.9 seconds and hit a top speed of 220kph. Coping with the added performance, roll stiffness has been increase and the body sits 15mm lower compared to regular variants of the Fiesta. Torque vectoring control helps reduce understeer around corners.
To offer a greater range of driving enjoyment and control, the ST’s electronic stability control (ESC) system features three switchable modes – fully Off, Standard, and Sport, the latter with a higher slip threshold to permit a sportier style of driving.
Complimenting the ESC system is Hill Launch Asssist, which holds the brakes on for a further three seconds after the driver releases the pedal, ensuring smooth hill starts. Additional safety equipment in the Fiesta ST come in the form of seven airbags, ABS, EBD, brake assist, Thatcham alarm, and seat belt reminders. On the amenities front, it features keyless entry, automatic headlamps and wipers, daytime running lights, and in-car connectivity via the Ford SYNC infotainment system.
Offered exclusively as a three-door hatchback, the Fiesta ST is further littered with various little details that provide a clear differentiation from regular variants of the Fiesta. From the outside, onlookers can spot its unique honeycomb grille, chin spoiler, rear diffuser, dual chrome-tipped exhausts, high-mount rear spoiler and 17-inch wheels. Interior features ST-specific gear knob, door sill plates, steering wheel, Recaro seats, and alloy pedals.
The Fiesta ST is available in three exclusive colours – Molten Orange, Panther Black and Spirit Blue – and it is covered by Ford’s Extended Service Plan (ESP) that provides 3 years or 60,000km of free maintenance covering labour and scheduled wear-and-tear items such as spark plugs, shock absorbers, engine belts, brake pads and wiper blades.
