BHPetrol today announced a sponsorship deal with Axle Motorsport which sees the formation of Axle BHPetrol Racing go-kart team. A signing ceremony was held at the BHPetrol TTDI kiosk to mark the occasion.

Representing their respective organizations were BHPetrol Managing Director, Mr Tan Kim Thiam, and founder of Axle Motorsport, Mr Alex Yoong. Three goals of the sponsorship deal were announced – development of young talent towards F1, strengthening of cooperation between the two companies, and to increase brand awareness.

“BHPetrol is delighted to be associated with Axle Motorsport as they are well-known in the go-karting industry. Their combination of visibility and leadership in the sporting arena makes it a natural fit for BHPetrol’s branding,” said Mr Tan.

Tan then added, “One of our primary motivations for our sponsorship in Axle Motorsport is to use the sport as a powerful business-to-business and create synergies between different companies within the partnering network.”

Also unveiled at the ceremony were the three young drivers who would represent the team in the 2010 Asian Karting Open Championship (AKOC, ed: Don’t laugh), and the Yamaha SL Cup – Daim Hishamuddin (12), James Pull (11), and Tan Wei Ron (15).

“Our primary target is to seal at least one championship under Yamaha SL Cup and a couple of podium finishes in the AKOC series,” added Mr Alex Yoong.

Yoong further reiterated the team’s main objective is to focus on helping its drivers build a solid foundation for their driving abilities. The importance of nurturing the correct habits, focus and attitudes into the mindset of the drivers early their development is crucial, together with the implementation of proper programs as they progress to higher levels. As Yoong puts it, “A driver’s development never stops.”

During the post-launching press conference, Yoong also noted it is crucial for any aspiring driver entering the sport to receive the right support from all quarters, which includes parents, and when expenses reach a higher level, sponsors.

Participation in motorsports is not without risk or significant expense. Accidents can and do happen on the track, though it is also important to note that most legal motorsports have excellent safety records. A case in point is that you are far more likely to injure yourself in a football match than, say, driving a Formula 1 car.
