Father And Son Join Forces In Quest Of Glory At Merdeka Endurance Race
With the support of a loving father and four great friends, Wong Yew Chong is confident that his Superture Motorsports Racing Team hopes to drive away as winners in the 1600cc class at the Merdeka Millennium Endurance (MME) in Sepang on August 27.
“My father has always been a source of inspiration for me. He is always there for me to support me especially when comes to racing,” says Yew Choong, or else known as Boy among the team members and his close friends.
Boy and driving partners aim to repeat their winning performance at the Merdeka Millennium Endurance race last year when their Honda Civic EK9 completed 249 laps to finish seventh overall , upstaging the higher powered Class B machines.
“Together with my father, KK, Tew and our beloved team manager Tek Kean Kang and the other crew members, we have the greatest team in the world. We can win this one again this year. They are my real companions,” said Wong, who also competes regularly at Sepang in the Malaysian Super Series in the Supersixteen Championship.
Financially back by Superture Workshop in Selayang, the Superture Motorsports Racing represents the aspiration behind the introduction of the Merdeka Millennium Endurance to promote the development of professional racing teams in Malaysia and to expand the pool of active players in motorsports.
Through the MME, Sepang International Circuit hopes to provide an opportunity for Malaysians to learn and run full-fledged racing teams from preparation of racing cars, drivers’ training as well as promotion of the team through public relations, advertising and media programmes.
Dressed in distinctive black shirts with orange lining, the Superture Motorsports Racing Team has also invested in a new engine for the car and a package or racing electronics equipment in their quest for a second MME title.
“We bought a new engine from Japan for the car. It has been specially built engine for endurance racing and that should give us the edge over our rivals,” said Boy, who was quick to add that the team was also praying for some good luck in the event.
“In motor racing, you need luck to win. But I am very fortunate to have my father as my good luck charm for the race. Everybody in the team loves him. He is a truly great guy,” said Boy of his 58-year old father, Wong San.
Commenting on his work in the team, Wong San said, “I am here actually just to help out the boys and my son. He is crazy about cars and racing. He loves Honda cars. Don’t ask me why.”
“But, as a father, I always give full support to him. He is a very good driver. He is also a very good son,” said the proud Wong San.
Introduced in 2000, the MME, now hailed as Asia’s biggest race, is a test of man and machine; stamina and sustaining power with three drivers taking turns to finish a 12-hour grueling race around the challenging 5.543-km Sepang F1 track.
