Jaecoo Malaysia Charges Ahead – First In SEA To Launch Jaecoo J7 PHEV
Jaecoo Malaysia is setting its sights high, becoming the first in Southeast Asia to launch the Jaecoo J7 PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle). This move positions the brand as a challenger in the premium SUV segment and aims to bridge the gap for Malaysian consumers hesitant to fully embrace fully electric vehicles while providing the flexibility of long distance travel sans anxiety.
“From the start of our journey in Malaysia, Jaecoo debuted as the market’s challenger premium SUV brand. Today, we are proud to retain our position as a challenger premium SUV brand in the new energy mobility space with the Jaecoo J7 PHEV. With the introduction of the Jaecoo J7 PHEV, we look forward to catering to the evolving needs of Malaysia’s discerning customers,” said Jaecoo Malaysia Vice President, Emily Lek.
Lek added, “The Super Hybrid System (SHS) with its best-in-class technology and performance is what we believe enhances Malaysia’s vibrant hybrid vehicle landscape and creates room for competitive growth. Essentially, we’re happy to provide greater options to drivers looking to make the transition to hybrid mobility, in support of Malaysia’s energy transition ambitions.”
The J7 PHEV’s Super Hybrid System (SHS), comprises 3 key components:
- 5th Generation 1.5L Turbocharged Gasoline Direct Injection Engine: This dedicated hybrid engine running a Deep Miller cycle to deliver 141 hp and 215 Nm, and utilising technologies like intelligent lubrication system, smart thermal management, and exhaust gas recirculation for maximum efficiency. A Miller cycle engine makes use of forced induction to compensate for power deficiency.
- Single-Speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission: This allows the J7 PHEV to operate as an EV at low speeds, disengaging the engine for pure electric driving. When power is needed, the electromagnetic clutch re-engages the engine to deliver more power. This enables a 0 – 100 km/h acceleration in 8.5 seconds (vehicle weighs 1,795 kg).
- High Voltage (HV) Battery: The 18.3 kWh battery, featuring a Lithium Iron Phosphate Blade design, ensures a consistent charge level and long-term performance. It can be charged to 100% and the management system never lets it drop below 20%. Rated for up to 1 million km, the battery is protected with 780 mpa battery armour and is puncture-proof.
The J7 PHEV’s battery also boasts an IP68 rating, making it dust and water-resistant, and is engineered to withstand extreme temperatures. It supports DC fast charging (up to 40 kW), allowing a 30 – 80% charge in just 20 minutes. AC charging at home via a 6.6 kW wall box (sold separately) takes less than 4 hours.
Jaecoo claims a combined range of up to 1,300 km (NEDC) on a single tank and charge, with a pure electric range of 106 km (NEDC). Fuel consumption is rated at 4.77 litres per 100km (NEDC) in a power-depleted state. The J7 PHEV’S driving range was put to the test in China as well as Southeast Asia.
Visually, the J7 PHEV stands apart from its ICE (internal combustion engine) sibling with a two-tone Olive Grey hero colour option, 19” Aero Rims, and aero side mirrors.
The J7 PHEV is currently available in 3 colours i.e. Khaki White, Carbon Crystal Black and Moonlight Silver. Khaki White is a limited-edition option with only 100 units of its kind in Malaysia, after which JAECOO will introduce the olive grey option.
More standing out includes a unique “Cinema Tonneau Cover” which allows for outdoor movie projections using the vehicle’s 3.3 kW Vehicle to Load (V2L) capability.
Inside, the gear knob is now a column-mounted shifter to free up more space in the centre console. With the J7 PHEV, you also have the choice to select full EV mode, or allow the vehicle to intelligently manage the driving mode. There are 2 power modes, 3 driving modes and 3 more power saving modes for you to choose between maximum power and maximum savings. It offers amaximum power output of 255 kW and 525Nm.
Safety features of the J7 PHEV include Level 2.5 ADAS, 8 airbags and enhanced features like Driver Monitoring System, Lane Departure Prevention, and Adaptive Cruise Control.
The Jaecoo J7 PHEV Premium SUV (2WD) is priced at RM158,800. It comes with a 7-year engine warranty (or 150,000 km) and an 8-year warranty (or 160,00 0km) on the battery, power motor, and power motor controller unit. The 8-year warranty provides a 1 to 1 exchange when the battery’s state of health (SOH) falls below 70% during the warranty period.
Further, an early bird package offers a 10-year (or 1,000,000 km) extended engine and high voltage battery warranty for existing bookings and bookings placed up to 2 March 2025. All J7 PHEVs also come with a complimentary Vehicle to Load (V2L) charger.

Staying true to our brand essence – From Classic, Beyond Classic, our focus is on taking good care of our customers through our growing network. And of course, delivering best-in-class premium SUVs that align to the market’s needs,” concluded Lek.
