Shell Eco-Marathon 2012 @ SIC open to public, 7 July

The Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2012 was officially flagged off this morning at the Sepang International Circuit, having attracted the participation of 119 student teams from 18 countries through Asia. The annual event created by Shell requires teams to design, build, and test vehicles that consume the least amount of energy be it fossil fuel, hydrogen, or electricity.

Teams contest their designs in two categories – Prototype and UrbanConcept. Prototype vehicles are streamlined futuristic concepts where the approach is to save fuel in whatever way possible, whilst UrbanConcept vehicles have to be closer in appearance to road-legal vehicles. This year’s Eco-Marathon has a total of 81 Prototype and 38 UrbanConcept entries.

The winning team of inaugural Eco-Marathon Asia 2010 clocked a fuel consumption of 1,521.9 km/l, whilst last year’s winner clocked an even more impressive 2,213.4 km/l. When we left the venue earlier today, the same Thai-based team had already breached the 2,000km/l mark for their runs this year.

The action will continue tomorrow at the SIC, and members of the public are invited to watch the event from 8:00am to 4:00pm. Visitors should enter via the Paddock Club Entrance and can watch the event from Paddock Club (PC) 1.
