New Volkswagen Golf R-Line 1.4 TSI Open For Booking
Introduced together with the Mk 8 Golf GTI is the tamer, more affordable Volkswagen Golf R-Line. There is no official price confirmed yet but Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) is estimating it to be between RM155,000 and RM165,000. Like the Golf GTI, the Golf R-Line is also locally assembled in Pekan.
The “R-Line” in its name suggests a sportier “Volkswagen R” inspired kit. The exterior gets the gloss black treatment on the front and rear bumpers, side skirts, and the shark fin antenna, and an ‘R’ logo on the upper grille. The 17″ Valencia alloy wheels complete the look. With the narrow LED headlights and lean upper grille, it looks similar to the GTI. It however, doesn’t have the GTI’s signature honeycomb lower grille nor the red accents.
Complementing its sporty exterior, are front sport seats dressed in Sardegna fabric and Art Velours side bolsters, complete with the R-line logo embossed on the headrest. However, seat adjustment is manual unlike the GTI. But like the GTI, the digital-age Driver’s Workspace dashboard has a new-generation 10.25” Digital Cockpit, a multifunction sport steering wheel with haptic touch control, as well as an advanced 10” Discover Media infotainment system with navigation and 7 speakers. Additionally, “Hello Volkswagen” voice control, and wireless app-connect for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are available, along with the ability to pair 2 mobile devices. The Golf is also the first Volkswagen model in Malaysia to use the new compact shift-by-wire gear selector, helping to give the interior a more minimalist feel.
Under the hood of the VW Golf R-Line is a 1.4L TSI turbocharged petrol engine with 150 PS and 250 Nm of torque. But rather than a dual clutch transmission, this new Golf uses an Aisin 8-speed automatic for practical purposes. Driving modes remain selectable, with progressive steering, sport suspension and XDS electronic differential lock to enhance the driving experience. Like the GTI, the R-Line also features battery regeneration during braking.
Safety kit includes Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, Driver Alert with fatigue detection, electronic stability control and traction control, anti-theft wheel bolts, 6 airbags, and front seat side impact airbags.
The Golf R-Line is available in 5 colours, including 2 new ones i.e. the matte Moonstone Grey and metallic Kings Red. Other colours are Atlantic Blue in metallic finishing, as well as Deep Black and Oryx White with pearl effect.
