Gentari Signs 80MW Wind Power Deal With AWS To Support Net Zero Goals
Gentari, the clean energy arm of PETRONAS, has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Amazon Web Services (AWS) for an 80 MW wind power project in Tamil Nadu, India. The deal marks a major step forward in both companies’ sustainability efforts and underscores their commitment to accelerating the global energy transition.
The agreement follows a broader collaboration signed in 2023 and represents Gentari’s first wind energy PPA with AWS. The wind farm, expected to begin operations by mid-2027, will generate approximately 300,000 MWh of renewable energy annually. This supply will directly contribute to AWS’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
At the official signing event, the PPA was exchanged between Low Kian Min, Chief Renewables Officer at Gentari, and Jeff Johnson, Managing Director of AWS ASEAN. The ceremony was witnessed by top leadership from both organisations, including Gentari Chairman and PETRONAS President & Group CEO Tengku Muhammad Taufik, Gentari CEO Sushil Purohit, and AWS Vice President of Global Services Uwem Ukpong, as well as Senior Vice President of Projects, Technology and Health, Safety, Security & Environment at PETRONAS Ir Ts Mohd Yusri Mohamed Yusof.
“This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to advancing practical, scalable, and clean energy solutions – vital for Asia and the world’s move towards a low-carbon future. Through projects like the Karur wind development, we are not just adding renewable capacity – we are addressing real energy needs where it matters most,” said Sushil Purohit. “Gentari is excited to support AWS in their net zero journey, and we welcome more partners to join us in building a more robust clean energy ecosystem.”
Jeff Johnson of AWS echoed the sentiment, stating, “Our collaboration with Gentari, a Malaysian clean energy leader expanding its regional impact, brings us a step closer to our goal. We’re proud to work with forward-thinking organisations like Gentari who share our commitment to both technological advancement and environmental stewardship.”
This project forms part of Gentari’s wider renewable energy growth strategy across Asia, and its focus on hydrogen, green mobility, and sustainable energy solutions. By building strategic alliances such as this, Gentari aims to scale up its regional footprint and accelerate the global shift to a low-carbon economy.
