Chery Previews Tiggo 7 PHEV And Tiggo 8 PHEV In Malaysia With Up To 1,200 km Range
Chery Malaysia recently previewed 2 new plug-in hybrid models—the Tiggo 7 PHEV and Tiggo 8 PHEV—highlighting a key strength that is set to appeal to local buyers: an electric-assisted driving range of up to 1,200 km. The 2 SUVs were unveiled at the launch of Chery’s new Super Hybrid (CSH) platform which is designed to combine high efficiency, seamless performance, and long-distance capability.
Targeting Malaysian families as well as eco-conscious drivers, the new plug-in hybrid SUVs signal Chery’s entry into the local PHEV segment, with full launch details to be announced in the near future.
The heart of the CSH system is a 1.5L turbocharged Dedicated Hybrid Engine that achieves 44.5% thermal efficiency, paired with a high-efficiency electric motor. Together, the hybrid system produces 255 kW (342 hp) and 525 Nm of torque. This is mated to a Stepless Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) that enables intelligent and smooth transitions between electric and hybrid drive modes. The result is a claimed range of up to 1,200 km on a full tank and charge—a benchmark figure aimed at easing range anxiety and positioning the Tiggo PHEVs as practical daily drivers with serious long-distance ability. This hybrid powertrain will also help to reduce fuel expenses, with its ability for all-electric drive of up to 90 km.
Both the Tiggo 7 PHEV and Tiggo 8 PHEV are fitted with a lithium iron phosphate (LiFePo4) battery that is IP68-rated for water and dust resistance. It is also safeguarded by Chery’s Guardian Battery Safety Protection System and can withstand extreme temperatures up to 95°C. The battery supports fast charging (40 kW DC) from 30% to 80% in just 20 minutes, and takes 3 hours for the same on 6.6 kW AC charging.
The Chery Super Hybrid platform also features intelligent energy management to maximise efficiency, reduce emissions, and adapt power usage based on driving conditions. Chery’s hybrid journey began in 2001, with the formation of a dedicated research and development team focused on clean energy solutions. Over 2 decades later, this effort has culminated in the 5th-generation CSH, refined and engineered for global deployment, including markets like Malaysia.
Chery Malaysia Vice President, Michael Chew commented, “With the Chery Super Hybrid platform, we aim to provide Malaysian drivers with the flexibility of electric driving, the range confidence of a hybrid, and the performance of a Chery.”

These new models are the latest additions to Chery’s CSH line-up following the recent launch of the Tiggo Cross Hybrid. Blending style, practicality, and extended range, the Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 PHEVs are expected to appeal to a wide range of users, including city commuters, growing families, and those who occassionally make long-distance road trips.
To further emphasize its technology leadership, Chery has subjected its hybrid battery system to a global series of extreme safety tests. Trials conducted in China and Indonesia have tested the battery under crash, flood, and corrosion conditions, while upcoming tests in Mexico will assess underbody protection across rugged terrain.
Chery’s plug-in hybrid range is part of a broader electrification strategy that includes petrol, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric vehicles for Malaysia. More information on the launch timeline, variants, and pricing is expected soon.
