Hyundai Establishes Direct Presence In Malaysia With Formation Of Hyundai Motor Malaysia
Hyundai Motor Company (HMC) of Korea has officially launched Hyundai Motor Malaysia (HMY) to mark a major strategic shift in its presence in Malaysia, from a distributor-led model to a principal-led operation. This move is indicative of the brand’s deepened commitment to Malaysia as a long-term growth market in the ASEAN region.
The establishment of HMY is a new chapter in Hyundai’s journey — one focused on agility, local empowerment, and innovation. The newly formed entity will oversee all aspects of brand, marketing, sales, and customer experience in Malaysia, with a dedicated team based at its new headquarters in Menara Affin @ TRX, Kuala Lumpur.
“Hyundai has always stood for progress — not just in mobility, but in how we connect with people, communities, and the future. Our founder’s belief in betterment and sustainable action continues to inspire us as we grow our global footprint. With the establishment of Hyundai Motor Malaysia, we are bringing the strength and agility of a global brand closer to home. This isn’t just a new chapter — it’s a long-term commitment to Malaysia as a strategic hub in ASEAN. Backed by innovation, vertical integration, and purpose-driven growth, we look forward to building with our partners, serving our customers, and contributing meaningfully to Malaysia’s economy,” said Eric Lee, President, Hyundai Motor Malaysia.
Three New Models Coming; Local Assembly Starts Q3 2025
HMY will introduce 3 new SUV and MPV models to Malaysia, with local production set to begin in Q3 2025. Partnering with Inokom Corporation Sdn Bhd, Hyundai plans to assemble up to 7 models over 5 years at Inokom’s facility in Kedah. This will include a mix of internal combustion engine (ICE) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) tailored for the Malaysian market, with 30% of output eventually targeted for export to regional markets.
“Malaysia is a market full of untapped potential — it boasts the highest passenger vehicle demand in ASEAN at 35%, with a steady GDP growth of 4.3% signalling strong consumer confidence and rising spending power,” said Jahabarnisa Haja Mohideen, Managing Director of Hyundai Motor Malaysia.
Strengthening Roots: Workforce, Dealerships & Aftersales
With a team that is expected to reach 100 employees by year-end, HMY is laying the foundation for an expanded dealership and aftersales network. The company is aiming for 25 service outlets by 2030, supported by improved digital tools and a refreshed customer ownership journey.
The transition will be carried out seamlessly, with Sime Motors, Hyundai’s previous distributor, continuing to support sales and aftersales operations.
“We are proud to have played a pivotal role in Hyundai’s growth in Malaysia. As Hyundai embarks on its next phase, we remain committed to supporting its sales and aftersales operations — ensuring continuity, confidence, and a seamless service experience for existing and future Hyundai customers,” said Jeffrey Gan, Managing Director of Sime Motors, Southeast Asia, reaffirming the company’s commitment to a smooth transition.
A Future-Ready Hyundai In Malaysia
The official presence of HMY comes alongside a revamp of Hyundai’s official website and social media platforms in Malaysia. Existing Hyundai customers are encouraged to update their contact details to ensure continued access to service reminders, updates, campaigns, and ownership benefits. “Malaysia has
always been an important part of Hyundai’s journey in Southeast Asia. With the establishment
of Hyundai Motor Malaysia, we are entering a new chapter that allows us to work even more
closely with our customers, partners, and communities,” added Lee.
Hyundai is also investing in upgrading its aftersales ecosystem, adopting global best practices to deliver enhanced service capabilities across its expanding network.
Hyundai has built a strong foundation in Malaysia over the years, having sold over 147,862 vehicles, from popular sedans and SUVs to electric and hybrid models. Notable nameplates include the Veloster, Elantra, Sonata, Kona, Tucson, Santa Fe, Starex, Staria, and the IONIQ 5 series.
