Jaecoo J7 PHEV Range Test: 1,427km On Single Charge & Tank; Launch Soon In Malaysia
The Jaecoo J7 Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) has made a bold statement about its capabilities, with the completion of a cross-border journey from Singapore through Malaysia and into Hatyai, Thailand, and showed that this hybrid SUV exceeded its advertised range and efficiency figures i.e. 1,200 km (WLTP). Five units of the 2WD J7 PHEV, covered a 1,427 km distance on a single tank of fuel and charge, with one recording 1,427.5 km of range. This drive proves the strength of its hybrid powertrain for the Malaysian market, according to the brand.
“We are incredibly proud to finally demonstrate the Jaecoo J7 PHEV’s performance to the local market. It has truly exceled when put to the test during the course of this journey, a testament to the Jaecoo brand promise of delivering best-in-class vehicles,” commented Jaecoo Malaysia Vice President, Emily Lek. “In addition to being the only PHEV with a direct current (DC) charging capability, our Super Hybrid System technology is the first in its class here in Malaysia. We are excited for our customers to enjoy the benefits of the Jaecoo J7 PHEV very soon.”
This long-haul test saw the Jaecoo J7 PHEV’s cover a distance of 947 km purely on petrol and a pure electric range of 108 km, which is 18 km more than its official specifications based on standardised tests. The recorded fuel consumption on this trip was 3.5L/100km, surpassing its standard of 6.6L/100km.
Super Hybrid System
The highlight of the J7 PHEV is the Super Hybrid System which combines a 5th generation 1.5L TGDI dedicated hybrid engine, a continuously variable dedicated hybrid transmission, and a high-performance hybrid battery pack. With an 18.3 kWh battery and a 60-litre fuel tank, and a combined system output of 255 kW (342 hp) and 525 Nm, the J7 PHEV is designed to meet the market’s demand for improved fuel economy and strong engine performance.
The J7 PHEV also has multiple energy replenishment modes for practicality and convenience, including:
-
Slow Charging: Via a standard 230V 3-pin plug at home, achieving 0 – 100% charge in 8.5 hours at 3.3 kW.
-
AC Charging: Charging from 30% to 80% in 3 hours at 6.6 kW.
-
DC Fast Charging: As the one plug-in hybrid in the market to offer DC fast charging, the J7 PHEV can get from 30 – 80% charge in 20 mins of charging at 40 kW.
Battery & Safety
Jaecoo has prioritised battery quality and safety, equipping the J7 PHEV with a specialised hybrid battery featuring a thermal management system. It is impact-resistant due to its Advanced Battery Aarmor with an internal shield and external iron-clad structure, an IP68 rating for resistance to heavy rain and flood, and and operating temperature range from -35°C to 60°C. It is also designed to remain fire-resistant under extreme conditions like punctures or compression.
Launching Soon In Malaysia
Jaecoo Malaysia’s intentions with this long road trip is to showcase to its potential buyers the practicality of its PHEV powertrain and to demonstrate its efficiency, range and energy consumption. The Jaecoo J7 PHEV will see an official launch in Malaysia in February 2025. It will be available solely in two-wheel-drive (2WD) configuration.
