Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Launches Electrified E-Class Models: E 200 & E 350 e
Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has introduced its new E-Class lineup i.e. the Mercedes-Benz E 200 and E 350 e models. These locally assembled luxury sedans blend cutting-edge technology, advanced electrification, and sleek design, setting new standards for performance and efficiency in their class. The Mercedes-Benz E 200 Avantgarde is priced at RM355,888, while the Mercedes-Benz E 350 e AMG Line plug-in hybrid is available for RM418,888 (on the road without insurance).
Both models incorporate Mercedes-Benz’s latest innovations in electrification. The E 200 is powered by a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that is paired with an Integrated Starter-Generator (ISG). This setup delivers 150 kW (204 hp) @ 5,800 rpm and 320 Nm of torque @ 1,600 – 4,000 rpm. Enhancing its efficiency, the mild-hybrid system includes a new battery that boosts the electric motor’s power from 15 kW to 17 kW, and increases torque to 205 Nm. On the other hand, the Mercedes-Benz E 350 e features the same 2.0L turbo engine but with output at a different range i.e. 150 kW (204 hp) @ 6,100 rpm and 320 Nm of torque @ 2,000 – 4,000 rpm. However, its plug-in hybrid powertrain that allows for a 95 kW (129 hp) all-electric drive with a range of up to 118 kilometers (WLTP), and can operate purely on electric power at speeds of up to 140 km/h. Overall, this system delivers a combined output of 230 kW (313 hp) and 550 Nm, ensuring a dynamic yet smooth driving experience.
In addition, the new E 350 e is designed with advanced driving modes and intelligent recuperation systems. The BATTERY HOLD mode preserves the battery’s charge for later use, making it especially useful for urban driving, while the ELECTRIC mode enables purely electric driving up to speeds of 140 km/h. The energy recuperation system is capable of generating up to 100 kW of power during deceleration, maximising energy efficiency. Drivers can manually adjust the level of recuperation using rocker switches behind the steering wheel or allow the system to automatically adapt based on traffic conditions. This seamless integration of electric and hydraulic brakes, coupled with smooth gear transitions, provides an enhanced driving experience that prioritises efficiency without compromising on performance.
The E 350 e is powered by a high-voltage battery developed in-house by Mercedes-Benz. This 4th-generation battery, with an energy content of 19.5 kWh, includes an internal cooling system that optimises performance in varying climates. A key feature of the battery is its fast charging capability; using the on-board 55 kW DC charger, the battery can be fully charged in just 30 minutes, ensuring convenience and flexibility for drivers.
Design-wise, both models use the classic 3-box proportions, like a “cab-backward” layout, elongated bonnet, and short front overhang. At the front, a black panel surface connects the grille and headlamps for a modern look. The E 200 comes with high-performance LED headlamps with Adaptive Highbeam Assist, while the E 350 e has the more advanced DIGITAL LIGHT headlamps with Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus, though the signature “eyebrow” LED daytime running lights are consistent on both variants. Also standard to both variants is the flushed door handles. At the rear, the dual-section LED taillights feature a new contour and a signature star motif to create a unique and unmistakable light display. However, the panoramic sliding sunroof is exclusive to the E 350 e, as are the 20″ AMG wheels; the E 200 rides on 19″ alloy wheels.
Inside, the E-Class takes digital luxury to new heights. The E 350 e boasts the MBUX Superscreen, with 3 screens spanning the entire dashboard, including a 14.4″ central display and a 12.3″ driver display. Meanwhile, the E 200 features a floating central display complemented by an open-pore ash wood trim backlit with the iconic Mercedes-Benz pattern. Ambient lighting creates a refined atmosphere in both variants, with Active Ambient Lighting exclusive to the E 350 e variant.
Both the E 200 and E 350 e are equipped with MBUX multimedia systems, with the latter offering a 3D driver display for an immersive spatial perception. The latest generation of MBUX has higher data processing power for improved digital experience. The AI-powered “routines” feature helps automate everyday tasks based on user habits, improving comfort and convenience for drivers. Additionally, the “Hey Mercedes” voice assistant has been enhanced with a new “Just Talk” function, which can now respond to commands without a keyword, further simplifying the in-car experience.
In terms of personalisation, the new E-Class supports various 3rd party apps like Zoom, Webex, TikTok and games like Angry Bird though its App Store. Mercedes-Benz has also introduced a Digital Vehicle Key that can be shared via iPhone or Apple Watch, allowing multiple users access to the vehicle. Additionally, the Burmester 4D surround sound system in the E 350 e adds another layer to the luxury experience, with Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos providing an immersive 360-degree soundscape. This technology integrates seamlessly with the vehicle’s Active Ambient Lighting, which syncs audio visualizations with lighting effects to enhance the driving atmosphere.
Comfort is a crucial component for the E-Class, with the E 200 getting ARTICO man-made leather upholstery and the E 350 e getting luxurious leather with climatised front seats with 3-stage ventilation and heating. In terms of driving dynamics, the E 200 features AGILITY CONTROL suspension with selective damping, while the E 350 e offers a balanced combination of comfort and agility through its advanced suspension system with passive damping.
Safety remains a key focus in both the E 200 and E 350 e models. Mercedes-Benz has equipped these vehicles with a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems, including ATTENTION ASSIST, Active Brake Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, and a Parking Package that includes a 360-degree camera. The Driving Assistance Plus Package offers additional features such as Active Steering Assist, Evasive Steering Assist, and Active Blind Spot Assist.
Parking has also been made more intuitive with an upgraded Active Parking Assist feature. This system allows for faster, automated parking at speeds of up to 4 km/h, making parking in tight spaces easier and more efficient for drivers. Further, the Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC system further enhances the driving experience by automatically adjusting the vehicle’s speed in response to traffic conditions, offering lane-keeping capabilities that make navigation through city streets or rural roads effortless.
