Porsche Malaysia Unveils New Taycan At Porsche World RoadShow In Sepang

Porsche Malaysia, represented by Sime Darby Auto Performance (SDAP), unveiled the new Taycan at the Porsche World Roadshow (PWRS). PWRS is still ongoing at the Sepang International Circuit, until 29 June 2024 where participants get to sample an extensive range Porsche models e.g. 911 Targa 4 GTS, 911 Turbo S, 911 GT3 RS, 718 Cayman GT4 RS, Spyder RS, Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid, Macan GTS, as well as the new Panamera, in driving sessions led by Porsche certified instructors.

The new Porsche Taycan is more than just cosmetic enhancement as it has received numerous updates inside and out. “The new all-electric Taycan has been improved in every aspect. With the significantly enhanced range and charging speed, it offers outstanding day-to-day usability. The new Taycan stimulates your senses with its extraordinary performance,” shared Christopher Hunter, Chief Executive Officer, Sime Darby Auto Performance.

Enhanced Powertrain and Performance

The new Porsche Taycan variants boast several modifications from the preceding model. The Taycan sports sedan offers 4 powertrain options, while the Cross Turismo is available with 3. The base Taycan has a rear-wheel-drive option and all-wheel-drive is available for the rest of the lineup. And both the Taycan sedan and the Cross Turismo come with an off-road package.

All updated Taycan models now accelerate faster than previous versions. The base Taycan and the Taycan Turbo S sit on the extreme ends of sedan range and can reach 100 km/h from a standstill in 4.8 and 2.4 seconds, respectively. More importantly, these times are 0.6 and 0.4 seconds faster than before. Furthermore, the new push-to-pass function in the Sport Chrono package offers a boost of up to 70 kW for 10 seconds (depending on variant) at the touch of a button, resulting in increased acceleration rate.

Increased Range and Faster Charging

The WLTP range of the updated Taycan has increased by up to 35%, now reaching up to 678 km (depending on variant), an improvement of 175 km. This enhanced range means fewer charging stops on long trips. Moreover, at 800-volt DC charging stations, the Taycan can now be charged at up to 320 kW (+50 kW from before). The new performance battery’s fast-charging window has also significantly expanded, allowing charging capacities of over 300 kW to be maintained for up to 5 minutes, even in low temperatures.

Thus, the time required to charge from 10 to 80% has been halved compared to the previous model (depending on driving style and other factors). For instance, the first-generation Taycan took 37 minutes to charge from 10 to 80% at 15 degrees Celsius. The updated Taycan can achieve this in just 18 minutes, despite its larger battery capacity. The Performance Battery Plus now has a gross capacity of 105 kWh, up from 93 kWh.

Porsche Malaysia also offers Taycan owners an exclusive platinum membership with special charging rates and benefits at Shell Recharge. This includes high-speed charging up to 360 kW at a discounted rate and complimentary 350 kW high-performance charging at all Porsche Centres.

Advanced Chassis and Efficiency Enhancements

All updated Taycan models feature adaptive air suspension as standard, with the Porsche Active Ride suspension available as an option for all-wheel-drive versions. This system balances driving comfort and dynamics, maintaining the vehicle’s level during dynamic maneuvers and absorbing bumps effectively. In dynamic driving situations, it ensures an almost perfect connection to the road by balancing wheel loads and compensating for pitching and rolling motions to reduce acceleration forces on occupants.

Efficiency improvements come from an advanced powertrain, a new rear-axle motor with up to 80 kW more power, an optimised pulse inverter, more powerful batteries, revised thermal management, a next-generation heat pump, and a modified recuperation and all-wheel-drive strategy. The maximum recuperation capacity during deceleration has now increased by more than 30%, from 290 to 400 kW. Additionally, all variants come with aerodynamically optimised wheels and reduced-rolling-resistance tires specially developed to improve efficiency.

Enhanced Equipment and Design

Despite weighing up to 15 kg less, the new Taycan models come with a more extensive standard equipment list, including ambient lighting, ParkAssist with a reversing camera, electrically folding exterior mirrors with surround lighting, heated front seats, Porsche Intelligent Range Manager (PIRM), a heat pump with a new cooling system, a smartphone tray for wireless charging, electric charging ports on both sides, a Drive Mode switch, and Power Steering Plus. Base models now also feature adaptive air suspension and aluminum door sill protectors as standard. The improved product specification also includes a higher capacity but lighter battery.

Design updates include new front and rear-end styling with new headlights and taillights. The front wings and flatter headlights emphasise the Taycan’s width. Turbo models feature high-resolution HD matrix technology headlights with 4-point graphics, and the rear light strip has a 3-dimensional, glass-look Porsche logo with an illuminated version available. In addition, the Turbonite accent colour distinguishes the Turbo and Turbo S models from other versions in both exterior and interior design.

Upgraded Control and Display Systems

The instrument cluster, central display, and optional passenger display now have an optimised user interface with additional functions. The mode switch on the steering wheel is standard, and models with the Sport Chrono package and Performance Battery Plus gain a special push-to-pass button. A new control lever behind the steering wheel provides more intuitive control of driver assistance systems while Apple CarPlay integration has been enhanced more deeply integrated into the vehicle displays and functions. Also, a new In-Car Video function allows video streaming on the central and passenger displays.

Additional options for the Malaysian market include 20″ rims, 14-way adjustable comfort seats in front, and a BOSE® Surround Sound System.

Taycan Turbo GT and Weissach Package

The Taycan lineup also includes the Taycan Turbo GT and Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach package, the new sporting flagship models. These models feature a more powerful pulse inverter, delivering 580 kW, which can increase to 760 kW with Launch Control or up to 815 kW for 2 seconds. The Taycan Turbo GT accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.3 seconds (2.2 seconds with the Weissach package). The difference in acceleration from standstill to 200 km/h is even greater i.e. 6.6 seconds for the Taycan Turbo GT (6.4 seconds with Weissach package). The Weissach package is even more laser sharp in its positioning, with additional aerodynamics and lightweight construction measures designed for performance (top speed increases to 305 km/h from 290 km/h). The maximum torque in both versions is up to 1,340 Nm, and the range is up to 555 km according to WLTP measurements.

The Taycan Turbo GT comes standard with the Dynamic package, which includes Porsche Active Ride suspension with GT-specific tuning, 21″ lightweight forged wheels with special performance summer tyres, and unique aerodynamic features like a front spoiler with aeroblades and an adaptive rear spoiler with a Gurney flap. The Taycan Turbo and Taycan Turbo S with Turbonite features differ from the other models in the series, while the Taycan Turbo GT has more of a racing vibe. Both models bear the coloured Porsche crest on the front bonnet as well as on the hub covers of the lightweight alloy wheels.
