Volvo Plug-In Hybrid Models Updated For 2024
The range of Volvo plug-in hybrid electric models in Malaysia i.e. XC90, XC60, S90, S60 and V60, are getting updated for 2024. The updates to the PHEVs are applicable to models introduced from September. This includes the addition of a new colour i.e. Vapour Grey.
All 2024 Volvo PHEVs will come with a more powerful on-board charger (OBC) that can take up to 6.4 kW using 2- or 3-phase charging for shorter charging times. For single phase systems, the vehicles will default to a lower 3.6 kW charging.
Standard on the 2024 models is a panoramic sunroof. Furthermore, the 2024 Volvo S90 Recharge gets a new 8-spoke wheel design, while the V60 Recharge and S60 Recharge get a new 6-spoke version.
The notable updates to the 2024 models include:
- On-board Charger (OBC) 6.4 kW 2-phase update for all new PHEV models.*
- Panoramic sunroof with power operation for all models.
- New Vapour Grey exterior colour option for all models in addition to the existing Onyx Black, Crystal White, Denim Blue, and Platinum Grey colourways.
- New rim designs for the Volvo S90 Recharge, Volvo V60 Recharge and Volvo S60 Recharge.
- 5-year complimentary Digital Services including access to Google Assistant, Google Maps, Google Play Store and Volvo Cars app remote functions for all new models.
- Built-in YouTube app inclusion for Google.** (The app can only be used when the car is stationary, e.g. while charging or taking a break from the road)
All 2024 car models also come with Volvo’s suite of safety features, such as Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), Lane Keeping Aid, and Collision Avoidance & Mitigation with Steering Support and Braking.
The Volvo XC90 Recharge continues to be the only 7-seater SUV that offers a plug-in hybrid system in Malaysia. Key features of the XC90 Recharge include active air suspension and a pure electric range of up to 77 km for emission-free commutes.
The Volvo XC60 5-seater SUV also shares some of the XC90’s premium features such as the Bowers & Wilkins high-fidelity audio system with individual Room sound profiles, air purifier, head-up display, hands-free tailgate, emergency stop and pilot assist, and a 360° Surround View Camera. You will also be able to schedule charging via the latest Volvo Cars app.
“Since the launch of the Volvo XC90 Recharge in 2016, the first-ever locally assembled plug-in hybrid in Malaysia, every vehicle we introduce brings us closer to our goal of becoming the leading maker of premium electric vehicles in the region,” said Charles Frump, Managing Director of Volvo Car Malaysia. “The 2024 upgrades, especially the improved charging speed for our newest range of plug-in hybrids, provide drivers with more ownership over fully electric journeys and the confidence to take the first step towards a fully-electric future with Volvo.”
The updated Volvo models will be available from September 2023. You can book test drives for the 2024 Volvo XC90, XC60, S90, S60 and V60 through Volvo Car Malaysia’s website.

* The On-board Charger (OBC) is a 6.4 kW 2-phase or 3-phase charger that converts AC voltage from the Electrical Vehicle Inlet (EVI) to high voltage DC for charging the vehicle’s high-voltage battery. By accommodating higher charging power in 2- or 3-phase charging, charging times are improved compared to single-phase charging:
- Charging power and charging time may vary depending on voltage level and whether another load is connected to the same circuit.
- Maximum 6.4 kW with 2-phase or 3-phase charging, or 3.6 kW with single-phase charging. Maximum charging current may vary.
- If the weather is very hot or cold, some of the charging current is used to heat / cool the hybrid battery, resulting in a longer charging time. If the parking heater is active, part of the charging current is also used.
** Version 2.11 customer software to be rolled out from September 2023. Software is primarily updated over-the-air (OTA). Updating at an authorised Volvo dealer may be charged unless it is included in a repair or service agreement. Updating software to the latest version also includes previous updates. Users will be notified through the centre display when new software is available over-the-air. To check current software version, go to “Settings”, “System” and “Software update”. Functionality after updating may vary depending on market, model, model year and options.
