Updated Toyota Corolla Launched; Includes Addition Of New GR Sport Variant
UMW Toyota Motor has launched the updated Toyota Corolla, including the addition of a new variant i.e. Corolla GR Sport. The 2023 Toyota Corolla IMP (Improvement) model retains the charm and usability of the Corolla, but with improvements, naturally.
“The Corolla GR Sport and the 2023 Corolla IMP model exemplify Toyota’s keen understanding and diverse needs within the Malaysian market. From delivering an exhilarating sporty driving experience to embodying refined elegance, these introductions underscore our unwavering commitment to providing a broad spectrum of driving experiences for our esteemed Malaysian customer,” said Datuk Ravindran K., President of UMWT.
The Corolla is still available in the 1.8 E and 1.8 G specs. Using the same 2ZR-FE 1.8L engine which offers 139 PS @ 6,400 rpm and 172 Nm @ 4,000 rpm, and the 7-speed sequential Shiftmatic CVT, updates include new 16″ (E variant) and 17″ (G) wheel designs, as well as a refreshed appearance, mainly in the shape of a new front grille with a mesh pattern.
Other improvements include a smart entry door handle on the front passenger side and a new exterior colour choice i.e. Metal Stream ME. Inside the car, the G and GR Sport variants get a wider 12.3″ multi-info display, improved seat design, USB Type-C port, as well as a clip to secure phones to the wireless charging pad. For extra comfort, the intake noise has also been reduced.
And for those who want a sportier looking sedan, the Corolla GR Sport brings not only a sportier look but a sportier ride as well. Riding on the popularity and success of Toyota’s GAZOO Racing motorsport exploits, the Corolla GR Sport wears a different, more aggressively styled front grille and bumper. Similarly, the rear bumper has been redesigned to include a rear diffuser while the sides also get GR Sport moulding; there is also a set of side mirrors finished in black. It also rides on larger 18″ wheels with 225/40 profile tyres.
On the inside, the red trimmings clue you in on this sportier variant, as does the GR branded start-stop button, GR embossed logo on the front seats’ headrests, as well as the sportier seat design clothed in leather.
Under the car, a front underbody protective plate not only protects the engine area from debris, it also acts to smoothen out airflow. But a more significant update underneath, compared to the E and G variants, is the GR Sport tuned suspension, that makes this more than just a cosmetically sporty variant. The shock absorbers, rear coil springs of the double wishbone set-up, as well as the stabiliser bars have been tuned and reinforced to offer improved handling. Likewise, the electric power steering has also been tuned by GR Sport.
Other notable features include a 9″ infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, front and rear digital video recorder, powered 8-way adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support, and dual zone climate control.
The Corolla GR Sport is available only in 3 colours i.e. Platinum White Pearl, Red, and Attitude Black.
The 2023 Toyota Corolla prices are (on the road without insurance for private registration in Pen. Malaysia):
Corolla 1.8 E – RM139,800
Corolla 1.8 G – RM147,800
Corolla GR Sport – RM152,800
