Perodua Contributes To The Conservation Of Kuala Selangor Nature Park
Staying on the topic of sustainability, Perodua recently contributed to the conservation of our mangrove ecosystem in Kuala Selangor. The Perodua Tree Planting Programme at the Kuala Selangor Nature Park is part of the UMW Green Shoots Initiative (UGS) corporate social responsibility programme which was started in the 4th quarter of 2021.
The UGS plan is to plant a total of 300,000 trees by the end of 2023 to revitalise mangrove forests. At the moment, approximately 174,000 trees have been planted since the launch of this initiative. The remaining balance of 133,000 trees are expected to be planted by the end of this year.
“Mangroves are a vital part of Malaysia’s ecosystem as it helps to protect riverbanks from environmental risks, particularly from flooding and tsunami,” Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad said. “Apart from that, mangrove trees protect water quality by removing nutrients and pollutants from stormwater runoff before they reach seagrass habitats and coral reefs. It also provides nursery habitat for many commercial fish and shellfish, thus contributing to the local abundance of seafood”.
Dato’ Sri Zainal said that the company is committed towards nature conservation because of its long-term positive impact. “Given the huge benefits of mangrove trees, Perodua has decided to tie up with the Malaysian Nature Society for the tree planting activity as part of our CSR activity”.
He added that as Perodua embarked on its Sustainable Development Goals journey, having such programme is important to reflect the company’s commitment towards achieving its goal. 
“The tree planting event is also related to one of the SDG goals (sustainable development goals), namely the goal number 15, Life on Land. Its objective is to stop biodiversity loss, stop land degradation, stop desertification, protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems and manage forests sustainably,” he added. “Therefore, the tree planting activity organised by Perodua can help spread more awareness to conserve the earth”.
About 120 volunteers from Perodua were involved in the one-day programme. Also present during the tree planting programme were Group Chief Financial Officer Cik Noor Zakiyah Hasan and General Manager of Corporate Relations and Communications Division, Puan Sulasi Haji Mahadi.
