WTC Automotif To Invest Over RM60m In Local Assembly & Sales Network For GAC Vehicles
WTC Automotif (M) Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Warisan TC Holdings Bhd, has confirmed a CKD (Completely Knocked Down) programme for GAC Motor vehicles. The local assembly of GAC vehicles entails an investment of over RM60 million that also includes the expansion of its sales and service network across Malaysia.
GAC, or Guangzhou Automobile Group, is one of the 5 biggest automakers in China. It has also ranked first for 8 consecutive years in China’s JD Powers Initial Quality Study. WTCA, the sole distributor here, had launched the GAC GS3 in December 2021 in CBU (Completely Built-Up) form. This model became the first right-hand-drive model for GAC. We had a go at the CBU model and it was a pretty enjoyable ride overall. With this local assembly project, the partnership between WTCA and GAC will move to the next level. Incidentally, this will also be GAC’s first CKD project in ASEAN.
This CKD project will be a long-term partnership for GAC Motor and the Tan Chong Group for the ASEAN region. Over the next 5 years, WTCA will introduce a comprehensive inventory of right-hand-drive GAC models in different forms i.e. SUV, MPV and Sedan. GAC Motor also will simultaneously develop its new global models for right- and left-hand-drive markets.
Part of the allocated RM60 million investment will be spent by WTCA on model-specific investment such as tools, jigs, and facility upgrades at the Tan Chong assembly facility in Segambut. It will also be spending on network expansion, with a plan to open more than 70 showrooms (branches as well as dealerships) throughout the country. It is currently working on a flagship showroom in Section 13 Petaling Jaya, which is expected to be ready by the 3rd quarter of 2023.
“The new flagship showroom will welcome all customers to visit and experience the GAC Motor hospitality and GAC Motor vehicles. Customers are encouraged to test drive to experience the superiority of the product,” said Tan Keng Meng, Chief Executive Officer of Warisan TC Holdings Bhd.
The first CKD model we will get to see will be the all-new GAC GS3 which will use a 3rd generation 1.5L turbo direct injection engine and a 7-speed WDCT gearbox. This engine reportedly produces 175 hp and 270 Nm @ 1,400 – 4,500 rpm. Its dimensions are 4,410 mm (length), 1,850 mm (width) and 1,600 mm (height), with a wheelbase of 2,650 mm. This makes it slightly larger than the current model. It is also expected to feature a Level 2 advanced driver assistance system. The gallery below shows the latest GS3 launched in China but we will have to wait to see what the CKD version has to offer.
“GAC has always placed utmost priority on delivering superior quality cars. We are confident that with its wide experience in the automotive industry, WTCA can meet our high manufacturing quality standards,” said Yu Jun, GAC Group Vice President and GAC International Chairman.
“We will be expecting that with 3 – 5 years development, the production and sales will reach 50,000 units. In order to fulfil this target, GAC will continue to coordinate internal and external resources and increase support for the Malaysian market, accelerate the launch of key models, improve the model matrix, and provide more intelligent and higher quality vehicle products for local consumers,” he added.
“We are confident that with our Tan Chong Group’s years of experience and our latest investment in our facility, we will meet GAC’s expectations. Our team has a strong collaboration with the GAC team to ensure that we are able to meet the GAC Quality Standards. GAC has set a very high standard in the automotive industry as they have dominated the top position in China’s JD Power Initial Quality Survey for 8 consecutive years,” added Tan Keng Meng.
