2023 Toyota GR86 Launched In Malaysia; Manual And Auto Options
The GR86 from Toyota is the embodiment of its commitment to sports car performance and engineering. Building on the success of the 86 coupe, the 2023 GR86 comes with improved performance, dynamics, technology and styling.
The Toyota GR86 uses a new 2.4L FA42 D-4S horizontally-opposed 4-cylinder engine that produces 237 PS @ 7,000 rpm and 250 Nm @ 3,700 Nm, as a replacement for the previous 2.0L one. The new naturally aspirated engine is capable of providing linear throttle response and smooth revving, which is perfect for spirited driving. Furthermore, buyers of the GR86 will have the choice of pairing the engine with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or 6-speed torque converter automatic (the latter with paddle shifters) according to driving preferences. The difference between the 2 transmissions would be the 0 – 100 km/h acceleration time i.e. 6.3 seconds for the manual, and 6.8 seconds for the auto.
To further maximise driving capability, the GR86 is fitted with a limited-slip differential on the rear axle, a range of drive modes, and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) settings that can be customised for road or track use. Additionally, the MacPherson strut (front) / double wishbone (rear) suspension (with GR-tuned coil springs and absorbers) and steering components have been tuned to improve agility. This is further enhanced by a lower centre of gravity as well as weight reduction through the use of aluminium in the body.
The exterior styling has elements taken from Toyota‘s great sports cars of the past e.g. 2000GT and AE86 Levin. The long bonnet, sloping roofline and tapered rear end with a prominent lip spoiler gives it dynamic proportions and a sporty silhouette. Dual exhaust pipes and GR badging in the rear complete the look, with complementing black 18″ alloy wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport tyres at each corner.
Inside, the GR86 cockpit has a simple and ergonomic layout for focused driving. The seats are a mix of premium leather and suede, and provide enough comfort and support for spirited drives, though they only have manual adjustment. A 7″ TFT colour LCD display provides all the information about the car’s operation, with a Track Mode designed with help from Toyota GAZOO Racing‘s professional drivers to provide the necessary driving data. Additionally, the multimedia infotainment system has an 8″ display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
The GR86 Active Safety Suite consists of pre-crash system, lane departure alert, cruise control (adaptive for automatic variant), automatic high beam, and reverse auto braking. In the event of a severe collision, up to 7 SRS airbags will deploy while 3-point seatbelts restrain the occupants.
