Toyota Camry Facelift Launched, Now With Dynamic Force Engine
UMW Toyota Motor has launched the Toyota Camry facelift which now features Toyota’s 2.5L Dynamic Force engine. We start with the more visible cosmetic updates. Adopting a ‘Refined and Superior’ design theme, the 2022 Camry 2.5V retains the same general appearance with its low and wide stance for a premium sporty look. The bumper gets a redesign while the lower grille bars remain and extend to the sides, with additional chrome plate ornamentation emphasising the bumper corner volume. The headlights are Bi-LED Projector units with integrated LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL) for bright illumination on minimal power consumption. These are automatic and have the Follow-Me-Home function. The wheel size remains at 18″ but with newly designed alloy rims. Meanwhile, the rear gets darkened LED combination lamps.
The bulk of the physical updates is actually on the inside where the layout follows the ‘Luxury and Premium’ concept with new black engineered wood ornamentation and smooth premium black leather upholstery. The driver’s seat has 10-way power adjustment while the front passenger has 8. Steering wheel position adjustment is also power-assisted, and there is a memory function to save steering and seat positions for different drivers.
The new car also has improved Human-Machine Integration. The streamlined dashboard is set low, providing a more generous view through the windscreen. It features 3 layers, with a centre console flowing down into the area between the front seats. To improve the driver’s view, the centre 9″ tablet-style infotainment display (with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto-ready) is positioned above the centre air vents and closer to the driver’s line of sight, increasing visibility and accessibility. Optitron meters are maintained and flank a 7″ TFT multi-information display. The driver can also refer to the Head-up Display (HUD) projected on the windscreen for such information as road speed, gear position, Driving Support System (directions, ACC display, LDA Display, Parking Sensor), audio details and TSS warning alerts. The 2022 Camry also comes with a wireless charger and 3 USB ports (1 in front, 2 at the rear).
For the comfort of the rear passengers, the Camry features power adjustment for the outer rear seats to recline by 8 degrees. There are also larger headrests fitted for enhanced comfort. Adjustments for the seat as well as the rear air-conditioning, sun-shade and audio system can be conveniently done on the control panel within the centre armrest. This convenience is a first in the Camry’s price bracket.
Also new for 2022 is the Tri-zone Automatic Climate Control system which allows the driver, front passenger and rear passengers to independently set their own temperature.
A major update, though not as visible, is the 2.5L Dynamic Force engine, which was developed concurrently with the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform that the Camry uses. The 2.5L all-aluminium Dynamic Force engine is the A25A-FKS 4-cylinder DOHC, 16-valve cylinder head unit with Dual VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with intelligence) on both the intake and exhaust sides. The intake side uses electric motors to vary the opening and closing of the ports and makes response quicker to alter intake timing according to driving conditions. The new engine produces 209 PS @ 6,600 rpm and 253 Nm of torque @ 5,000 rpm. This represents an increase of 25 PS (+13.6%) and 18 Nm (7.6%) over the previous engine. The engine is mated to a lighter, more compact Direct Shift 8-speed automatic transmission which has high efficiency and lower energy losses, and includes paddle shifters.
Dynamic Force is Toyota’s engine family that adopts high-speed combustion technologies and a variable control system. It also achieves greater thermal efficiency, resulting in high output, due to a reduction in energy loss associated with exhaust and cooling systems, the movement of mechanical parts, and other aspects. As a result, these engines can achieve world-leading thermal efficiencies of 40% and are cleaner burning.
The Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) suite also now includes:
- Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) – all speeds, with stop & go, signal-linked overtaking and Curve Speed Reduction
- Pre-Collision System (PCS) with pedestrian and cyclist detection
- Lane Departure Alert (LDA) + Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) & Steering Assist
- Lane Tracing Assist (LTA)
- Auto High Beam (AHB)
Other assistance features include a Panoramic View Monitor (PVM), Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) & Rear Cross Traffic Auto Brake (RCTAB) and Intelligent Clearance Sonar (ICS).
