All-New Hyundai Elantra Officially Launched In Malaysia
After an introduction in early December (includes image gallery), the all-new seventh-generation Hyundai Elantra is officially launched in Malaysia. There is currently one variant available for sale at an introductory price of RM158,888 (Peninsular Malaysia, excluding insurance), which is fully imported from South Korea. This price is not too far off from our earlier guesstimation of RM160,000, so it is within expectations of what car prices will be like going forward. It comes with a five-year or 300,000 km warranty (whichever comes first).
The new Elantra CN generation offers a futuristic and unconventional design for those who want to stand out and be different. For Hyundai, this daring and non-conforming mindset had worked well, as evident with the previous Sonata YF model.
“The new Elantra is a game changer, not just in its looks but the entire package that comes with it. Its sporty elegant look that comes with a high-tech premium interior and Hyundai’s Smartsense features make it an unbeatable C-segment car in its class,” said Mr Low Yuan Lung, Managing Director of Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors.
The Elantra design is based on Hyundai’s Sensuous Sportiness concept. “The Elantra carries an intricate design of geometric crystals cut and divided body surfaces with the clever usage of line patterns, which resulted in the colourful ‘Parametric Dynamics’. This design element is a daring challenge, which has not been seen in any car design, marking Elantra’s disrupter-spirit,” added Mr Low.
The Elantra is also the first Hyundai model to be fitted with an intelligent transmission (IVT) that offers class-leading performance and fuel economy. It is paired with the Smartstream G1.6 MPi petrol engine which is capable of producing 123 PS @ 6,300 rpm and torque of 154 Nm @ 4,500 rpm. Four drive modes are available for different driving styles i.e Smart, Comfort, Eco and Sport.
Built on Hyundai’s third-generation K3 vehicle platform, the new Elantra boasts improved key interior dimensions over its predecessor i.e. an increase of about 56 mm in overall length, 20 mm in wheelbase length and 25 mm in overall width. On the other hand, overall height has dropped by 20 mm while the front cowl point has been moved back about 50 mm. Though it may seem like a minor change, this dramatically changed the shape of the car without sacrificing cabin space.
The car now has a sleeker roofline compared to its predecessor, without compromising interior headroom. The Elantra boasts 1,031 mm of front headroom and 947 mm of rear headroom. The longer wheelbase also provides a best-in-class 965 mm of rear legroom while the wider track width means improved shoulder room for all. Boot space is over 470 litres and the 60:40 split folding rear seats make it convenient to transport bulky items with ease. Convenience in the rear includes the Smart Trunk contactless feature which detects the proximity of the key fob to the trunk, instead of needing to kick under the bumper.
Inside the Elantra is an “immersive cocoon” that envelops the driver similar to an airplane cockpit. A large interface consisting of two 10.25″ Supervision TFT and an 8″ floating display enhances ease of use while adding a futuristic feel.
The 8″ infotainment system displays a wide variety of useful information such as utility, driver assistance and navigation. Further, the Elantra has a segment-first wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and multi-connection Bluetooth support for two devices to be paired at the same time i.e. one for phone calls and one for streaming audio.
For safety, apart from the six airbags and other standard safety kit, the Elantra is also fitted with Hyundai’s Smartsense package which includes:
- Blind-Spot Collision Avoidance Assist (BCA) with Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA)
- Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with Stop & Go function
- Lane Keep Assist (LKA) and Lane Following Assist (LFA)
- Forward Collision Avoidance Assist
- Rear Occupant Alert
- Safe Exit Warning
- Driver Attention Warning
- Leading Vehicle Departure Alert
The Elantra is now available for viewing at all authorised Hyundai showrooms nationwide.
