Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Commercial Vehicles Partners With Tekat Automotive College For Skills Development

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Commercial Vehicles (MBMCV) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tekat Automotive College to raise the level of skills training for youths in the automotive workforce. The MoU was signed by Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Vice President, Commercial Vehicles, Mr Albert Yee; and Senior Manager, CV After-Sales, Mr Tan Kien Kee; Tekat Automotive College Managing Director, Mr Liew Ee Kin; and Marketing Director, Ms Meera Prasanna V, to facilitate an eight-month training programme for selected Tekat Automotive College students.

Wisma Mercedes-Benz & Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Training AcademyThis pilot programme, known as the Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicle Apprenticeship Programme, will be conducted at Mercedes-Benz Malaysia’s Training Academy. There will be theoretical and practical aspects covered by the program, including preventive maintenance, repair on difficult aggregate for various systems, and functions on drivetrain, chassis and electric system for Mercedes-Benz and FUSO commercial vehicles.

“As the automotive industry grows, there is a need for skilled manpower, and it is very important now to keep up with the times with the automotive technology today. We see this partnership with Tekat Automotive College as a start of a strong foundation for future teamwork in other areas and most importantly, leaving a great impact on Malaysian youths and the automotive industry, commercial vehicles sector,” said Mercedes-Benz Malaysia, Senior Manager, Mr Tan Kien Kee.

The students are required to undergo a Pre-enrollment Assessment which consists of a theory test and an interview in order to apply to Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicle Apprenticeship Programme. The prerequisite for entry involves successful completion of SKM level 3, being aged between 18 – 24 years old, having basic automotive knowledge, and possessing logical and problem-solving thinking.

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Training Academy - Mercedes & FUSO TrucksThe 15 students who pass the Pre-enrollment Assesment from Tekat Automotive College will undergo the eight-month course on commercial vehicles. Upon completing the course, the students will be certified as ‘MBCV Qualified Maintenance Technician’ and ‘Qualified FUSO Maintenance Technician’ with a guaranteed job placement for 2 years within the Mercedes-Benz dealer network nationwide.

Launched earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia’s Training Academy features a fully operational workshop for real world workplace simulation and state-of-the-art training rooms purpose-built and equipped according to the latest Daimler AG Global Training standard. Thus far, this new establishment has trained over 30 CV students who have proceeded to jobs in Mercedes-Benz Malaysia’s dealership network.

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Training Academy - Mercedes Truck EngineAdditionally, the Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicle Apprenticeship Programme is designed to push students further in their thinking skills and encourage them to be pro-active in their learning. The programme also includes service and parts marketing and warranty training to ensure that the students are well prepared with the latest warranty guidelines and its processes before entering the automotive industry. During the course, students are also given a monthly allowance of RM 1,200 and On-The-Job Training which provides invaluable hands-on experience in preparation of their career.

“Through this partnership, students will not only be able to be placed in the industry successfully, but will also be able to add on their automotive skills to ensure continuous learning development. Our partnership with MBMCV represents a benchmark for the Tekat Automotive College to ensure the strengths and the capabilities that universities develop in their graduates must be matched to business and industry needs,” said Tekat Automotive College Marketing Director, Ms Meera Prasanna V.

This partnership follows a six-month discussion between Mercedes-Benz Malaysia and Tekat Automotive College. The Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicle Apprenticeship Programme is expected to commence in November 2017.
