Honda Malaysia stopped its production lines in its plant in Pegoh, Melaka yesterday for good reason. Not only did the company achieve sales of 100,000 units in the current financial year (which ends today, 31 March), it also rolled out its 600,000th locally produced vehicle – the recently facelifted Honda City, currently the best-selling B-segment sedan.
Honda Malaysia’s Pegoh facility started operations in 2003 producing 4 models. Line 2 began in 2014 and helped double the plant’s production capacity to 100,000 units annually. The Pegoh facility now produces 7 different Honda models, utilizing modern machinery like the spray robots and automated smart welding machines.
Mr. Seiji Kuraishi, Executive Vice President, Executive Officer and Representative Director of Honda Motor Co, Ltd, who attended the celebrations was appreciative of Honda Malaysia’s efforts to expand the brand’s presence. Mr. Kuraishi was the 2nd Honda Malaysia Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer, serving between 2002 and 2005 and overseeing the commissioning of the Pegoh plant; some of his young hires are now managing the company.
Also present was Mr. Noriake Abe, Chief Operating Officer, Regional Operations (Asia & Oceania) of Honda Motor Co Ltd, and President & CEO of Asian Honda Motor Co Ltd. Mr. Abe commended the accomplishments of Honda Malaysia and expressed gratitude to all involved, including business partners.
Honda Malaysia Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Katsuto Hayashi, said the 2nd production line helped the brand to meet market demand and grow. Line 2 enabled the company to achieve 300,000 production units in 3 years; it took 11 years to achieve the same volume when it had just 1 production line. He also commented that the company’s success wouldn’t have been possiblewithout the good strategy and challenging spirit from the Honda family, which includes employees, dealers and associates.
