Patent Images Show Off 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback

Shortly after the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback prototype was revealed at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, the internet was set ablaze with “leaked patent images”; it’s quite typical of car manufacturers to file patents of their new designs to protect their copyright.

Comparing the prototype displayed at Geneva and the patent drawings, the most obvious differences are less aggressive bodystyling and the absent center twin exhaust pipes. The faux front grille intakes and matching rear vents are still very prominent features.

The 10th generation Civic hatchback is said to be longer, wider and lower than the current hatch; the prototype is 30mm wider, 20mm lower and 130mm longer than the current car.

The Civic will be launched with three engines, including two new turbocharged VTECs – a 1.0L three-cylinder and a 1.5L four-cylinder. Details from the new made-in-Thailand Civic sedan show the 1.5L produces 174 hp and the 1.0L should put out about 100 hp. There is expected to be a 1,6L i-DTEC turbocharged diesel engine for Europe.

Interestingly, the new Civic sedan recently launched in Thailand also features the existing 1.8L i-VTEC with 141 hp mated to a CVT, so if the hatchback does make it here, this pairing will be a very likely offering.

This new design also looks ripe for a wagon and Type R version, which Honda is said to be developing.
