New hoverboard being tested by…. Lexus?

It’s 2015 and as many fans of the famed movie trilogy Back to the Future will tell you, this is supposed to be year which cars fly. That scenario has yet to become reality, but another iconic piece of technology portrayed in the ‘future’ setting of the franchise’s second movie is actually under development.

We are referring to the hoverboard which, if you need any introduction, is a self-levitating platform that was supposed to have taken the place of a skateboard. Apparently, the technology is a reality, but what’s even more surprising is that it is being developed by Lexus in the fourth project of the Lexus Motion’ campaign that is supposed to showcase the creativity and innovation of the brand.

The Lexus hoverboard floats on air using magnetic levitation generated by liquid nitrogen cooled superconductors and permanent magnets. Outwardly, it is wrapped in a unique Lexus design with the iconic spindle grille signature shape and materials found in its cars.

“At Lexus, we constantly challenge ourselves and our partners to push the boundaries of what is possible,” said Lexus International executive vice president Mark Templin.

“That determination, combined with our passion and expertise for design and innovation, is what led us to take on the hoverboard project,” he continued.

Testing of the hoverboard will take place in (no, not Hill Valley) Barcelona, Spain, in the coming weeks.
