Toyota and Mazda have announced an agreement in which the two Japanese car makers enter a long-term technical partnership that would presumably see joint development of future products.

Although this partnership will not represent the first collaboration between the two companies, it is shaping up to be the most comprehensive between them. Previously, Mazda had licensed Toyota’s hybrid technologies for use in the Mazda3 SkyActiv-Hybrid and Toyota had used Mazda’s Mexico plant to produce its compact cars.

Detailed specifics and full scope of the agreement has yet to be disclosed, although it was revealed that a committee consisting of representatives from both companies is being set up to evaluate on ways in which each company’s respective strength’s can be best utilized.

In the official announcement released by both companies, it was further stated that this partnership ‘will go beyond the traditional framework of cooperation, aiming instead to create a whole new set of values for cars through wide-ranging medium to long term collaboration’.
