Jeep makes official return to Malaysia

Much like how Pampers defined the diaper market to the point where it become an interchangeable name with the product, Jeep is also the brand that defines the SUV genre – the word ‘jeep’ is used by many consumers as a generic term to describe SUVs; there even exists a Malay translation of the term, spelled ‘jip’, and it is used as an official designation by JPJ in our registration cards.

The Jeep brand has been out of the Malaysian scene for sometime now, however, but after a fourteen year hiatus and now part of the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) group, the iconic SUV brand makes an official return to our shores via Jeep Malaysia, a subsidiary of DRB-Hicom which is appointed as exclusive distributor of the brand.

Four models mark Jeep’s return to Malaysia, and leading the line-up is the Grand Cherokee Overland flagship, powered by Chrysler’s 3.6-litre V6 Pentastar engine mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Priced at RM468,889, the Cherokee Overland comes with equipment such as self-leveling bi-xenon headlamps, open-pore wood trim, and leather trim on the seats and even part of the dashboard.

Next comes the Cherokee Trailhawk at RM378,889. Featuring the combination of a 2.4-litre engine with 9-speed automatic transmission, the Cherokee Trailhawk comes with an active 4×4 driveline with rear axle disconnect. On board amenities include an 8.4-inch touchscreen navigation and a 7-inch full colour instrument cluster.

The iconic Jeep Wrangler, meanwhile, is offered in three variants – Unlimited Sport at RM288,889, Unlimited Sahara at RM328,889, and Rubicon at RM338,889. Designed with maximum focus on off-road prowess, the Wrangler is underpinned by ladder frame construction with live axles and electronic lockers.

Most affordable model in the range is the Compass Limited at RM248,889. Powered by a 2.4-litre engine, it is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

A new 3S centre in Glenmarie now serves as Jeep’s sole touchpoint to customers. Situated along Jalan Pelukis U1/46, the seven-day-a-week 3S centre is equipped with a total of eight service bays for quick vehicle turnaround and for customer comfort, is equipped with amenities such as waiting lounge, free flow of refreshments, and Wi-Fi access. All new Jeep vehicles are covered with a 5-year / 150,000km warranty.
