Hyundai Genesis achieves highest ever Australasian NCAP score
The Hyundai Genesis has set new standards of safety having just secured the highest ever score in the history of the Australasian New Car Assessment Programme securing a maximum five-star rating in the process.
In a demanding assessment process that includes a 64kph frontal offset impact test, 50kph side impact test, 29kph pole test, 32kph rear-end impact whiplash test, and 40kph pedestrian impact test, the all-new Genesis secured an impressive 36.88 points out of a maximum 37.
Breaking the points tally down, the Genesis scored full marks of 16 and 2 points respectively in the side impact and pole tests respectively, whilst dropping only 0.12 points in the frontal offset crash to score 15.88 out of 16. In other test components, the Genesis was rated ‘Good’ for whiplash protection and ‘Acceptable’ for pedestrian protection.
Commenting on the Genesis’ results, Australasian NCAP Chairman Mr. Lauchlan McIntosh praised the high level of safety equipment fitted as standard in Hyundai’s latest flagship.
“This is one of the first times we have seen the word ‘Standard’ listed against almost every safety feature on our checklist. Importantly, automatic emergency braking is one of these standard features – one that has recently been left off many new models hitting our shores,” he said.
The Genesis will be launched in Australia next month and will include the following safety features as standard across the range:
• Adaptive Cruise Control
• Electronic Brake Distribution
• Electronic Stability Control
• Automatic Emergency Braking
• Daytime Running Lights
• Emergency Stop Signal
• Lane support system
• Pre-safe systems
• Reversing collision avoidance
• Tyre pressure monitoring system
• Active lift (pop-up) bonnet
• Nine passenger airbags including driver’s knee airbag
We understand the Genesis is poised for entry into Malaysia as well, although its specifications may vary from the Australian models as tested here.
The Genesis’ impressive display in the Australasian NCAP follows its selection by the US Insurance Institute for Highway Safety as a 2014 Top Safety Pick+ model. It also excelled by earning a ‘Good’ rating in the institute’s ridiculously difficult small overlap crash test.
“This record ANCAP test score for Genesis speaks volumes about our flagship car’s structural integrity, its safety features and the technologies provided as standard,” said Hyundai Motor Company Australia Chief Executive Officer, Charlie Kim.
