New Volkswagen Golf R arrives in Malaysia

The performance flagship of the Volkswagen Golf 7 has arrived as Volkswagen Group Malaysia (VGM) formally announces the launch of the all-new Golf R, a model variant that traces its origins back to the Golf R32 introduced with the fourth-generation Golf.

Available in three- and five-door bodystyles, the new Golf R is powered by Volkswagen’s latest generation EA888 2.0-litre TSI engine shared with the Golf GTI but with uprated components and strengthened internals to handle higher output levels quoted at 276hp and 380Nm by VGM. Internationally, VW quotes 296hp for this same model, indicating that the engine had to be detuned for our market – a similar situation as faced by its predecessor.

Traction goes to all fours through the Haldex-based 4Motion all-wheel drive system. In between lies a 6-speed wet clutch DSG transmission, enabling acceleration from 0 to 100kph in five seconds flat and a rated fuel consumption of 6.9 l/100km in the European combined cycle. These figures make the new Golf R not only the fastest production Golf ever, but also more fuel efficient than its predecessor, a feat made possible by incorporating fuel saving technologies such as auto start/stop and brake energy regeneration.

For the Malaysian market, Volkswagen pitches the three-door version as an ‘entry’ version at an on-the-road price of RM247,060 before insurance. Equipment at this level includes a 5.8-inch central touchscreen, USB, Bluetooth, dual-zone climate control, premium multifunction display with lap timer, bi-xenon headlights, and the usual sprinkling of R-exclusive upholstery and trimmings.

The five-door model loads up on the bells-and-whistles at a RM40k premium to bring 12-way electric driver seat adjustment, rear air-con vents, auto-dimming rear view mirror, auto headlights, 8-inch touchscreen, adaptive dampers, keyless entry, sunroof, parking sensors, auto wipers, and reverse camera among other amenities.

Safety, as usual with Volkswagen vehicles, is uncompromised in the Golf R. Multi-collision brakes, standard feature in all MQB-based VW models kicks off a list of safety aids that further includes seven airbags, two-stage stability control, whiplash-optimized head rests, and XDS+ front and rear electronic differentials.
