Mazda3 and Mazda6 commence production in China
Mazda has commenced production of the all-new Mazda3 and Mazda6 in China ahead of the two model’s scheduled debut at the People’s Republic in May.
Production of the 3, known there as the Mazda3 Axela, takes place at the Changan Mazda Automobile Co. Ltd. (CMA) plant, in Nanjing, China, whilst the Mazda6 Atenza is being produced on consignment by FAW Car Co. Ltd. (FCC) in Changchun.
A bit of history, CMA was previously a three-way joint-venture between the Chang’an Automobile Group, Ford Motor Company, and Mazda Motor Corporation that was restructured and divided in 2012 to spawn CMA and Changan Ford Automobile Co. Ltd.
Mazda’s Executive Officer in charge of operations in China, Nobuhiko Watabe attended both ceremonies and commented, “The reinforcement of our business in emerging markets and establishment of a global production footprint is one of the pillars of Mazda’s Structural Reform Plan, and the start of production of the Mazda6 Atenza and Mazda3 Axela in China represents a giant step forward in our initiatives in this area.”
Start of production of the new Mazda3 Axela and Mazda6 Atenza in China follows the recent roll-out of the new Mazda3 in both Mexico and Thailand recently. In months to come, both the Mazda3 and Mazda6 are scheduled to commence production in Malaysia as well at the company’s expanding production facilities in the Inokom plant at Kulim, Kedah.
