Geneva 2014: Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II
An updated version of the Rolls-Royce Ghost, dubbed the Series II, makes its debut at the Geneva Motor Show bringing a raft of evolutionary changes and technological enhancements as a timely product refresh.
Launched globally in 2009, the Ghost is offered as a smaller and more nimble alternative to the Phantom. Whilst Phantom owners perch themselves exclusively at the backseat, Ghost owners are supposed to be the type who occasionally get behind the wheel themselves.
A subtly enhanced fascia differentiates the new Ghost Series II from the original. More intricate details feature, with new LED headlamps with integrated daytime running lights providing forward illumination. The entire assembly housing forgoes the rectangular design for a more trapezoidal shape. The bumpers have also been re-profiled to create a wider stance.
Inside, Rolls-Royce reworked both the front and rear seats, giving the forward pews electric thigh support and depth adjustment, whilst the rear seats have been subtly re-angled toward each other to facilitate more effortless chit-chat – ideal for those business discussions on the move. Additional bespoke trim options are available for selection, namely two new veneers by the names of Paldao and Walnut Burr Crossband.
Under its veil of luxury, are a few tweaks to the chassis; the front and rear struts have been re-engineered, new steering gear and adjustable dampers that is said to improve the car’s cornering ability in conjunction with the optional Dynamic Driving Package. New hydraulic rear axle bearings enhance ride quality and rear stability whilst reducing vibrations and cabin intrusions.
As before, powering the Ghost is a 6.6-litre derivative of BMW’s N74 twin-turbo V12 developed exclusively for Rolls-Royce applications. Continuing with outputs of 563hp and 780Nm, the engine pairs with the highly-acclaimed ZF 8-speed automatic transmission augmented by satellite-fed GPS mapping data that allows the transmission to make its gear selections in anticipation of upcoming road conditions. Rolls-Royce dubs this technology Satellite Aided Transmission and it is standard in the Ghost Series II.
