All-new 2014 Honda City open for bookings

Honda’s renewal of its model line-up continues apace with the all-new 2014 Honda City now officially available for bookings at all Honda dealerships nationwide ahead of the new model’s scheduled launch in March.

Available in four model variants, the all-new City will be the first of five new models Honda has lined up for launch in Malaysia this year. The remain four models consist of a mixture of all-new models, facelifts, and new CKD hybrid variants to take advantage of the 2014 National Automotive Policy that seeks to lure car makers to assemble energy efficient vehicles in the country.

Measuring longer and wider than its predecessor, the new 2014 City nevertheless persists with the tried and tested 1.5-litre single-cam i-VTEC engine from the outgoing model producing unchanged outputs of 118hp and 145Nm, the latter now arriving 200rpm earlier than before at 4,600rpm. A CVT replaces the current model’s 5-speed torque converter automatic. As before, no manual option is offered.

The new City will come equipped with a suite of highly-competitive equipment, although some will understandably be reserved for the higher-specced models. Depending on variant, notable equipment on offer include six airbags, stability control, ISOFIX, keyless entry and start/stop button, 7″ touchscreen audio with eight speakers, rear air-con vents, and steering-mounted controls.

Customers of the new City are also likely to benefit from Honda’s peerless packaging ability; rear passenger space is claimed to be class-leading, and boot space is measured at an eye-opening 536 litres. Fuel tank capacity has been marginally reduced, however, going from 42 to 40 litres. A sticking point for enthusiasts, but probably not for potential customers, will be the omission of rear disc brakes – the new City will have rear drums as standard.

Prices of the new City have yet to be revealed, but we anticipate them to be competitive and well within the ballpark figures of the segment’s two biggest players – the Toyota Vios and Nissan Almera. The current City is priced from RM86k to RM91k.
