Ferrari California T returns turbo power to Maranello
Not since the legendary F40 of 1987-1992 has there been a turbocharged Ferrari, but with European emission laws coming down hard and fast, Maranello has chosen to end over two decades of abstinence from forced induction with the new Ferrari California T, set to be launched at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show.
In place of the front-mounted 4.3-litre V8 currently occupying the engine room comes a new downsized 3.9-litre mill with the same cylinder count. Boosted by twin-scroll turbochargers, the 3,855cc V8 churns out 552hp @ 7,500rpm and 755Nm @ 4,750rpm. Compared to the outgoing engine, we are looking at a 14% increase in power and 49% increase in torque.
Following the standard script of turbocharged engines, the new blown eight-pot also enjoys a 15% decrease in fuel consumption and a 250 g/km reduction in carbon dioxide emissions over the natural-breathing 4.3. Performance numbers of the California T powered by the new engine reads 316kph for top speed and 3.6 seconds for the century sprint.
Besides an all-new powertrain, the California T also employs the services of a new steering box and suspension setup. New springs and latest-generation Magnaride dampers (claimed to respond 50 per cent faster), combined with body motion accelerometers, is said to reduce roll and pitch, thus ensuring a combination of precise handling and good ride comfort.
Incorporating Ferrari’s extensive motorsport experience honed from years in Formula 1, the California T is fitted with the latest generation F1-Trac traction control system. Stopping power is provided by CCM3 carbon-ceramic brakes with composite discs and pads. Working in concert with the vehicle’s high-performance ABS and the new ESP 8.0 stability control system, the California T is hauled to a full stop from 100kph in just 34 metres.
Ahead of its scheduled Geneva debut next month, Ferrari fans can visit the Prancing Horse’s official website at www.ferrari.com to view the California T online in its two launch colours – Rosso California and Blu California.
