Malaysian teams bring home five titles from Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2014

Student teams from Malaysia did the country proud as teams from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Monash University, and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) bagged a total of five titles from the Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2014 event held at the Philippines last weekend.

The overall trophy haul included three champion titles, with two teams from UiTM Shah Alam taking the Prototype Hydrogen and Urban Concept Hydrogen categories, whilst the Monash team took home the Prototype Alternative Diesel Fuel category in addition to winning the Shell Helix Tribology off-track awards. Team UKM 2 completed a Malaysian 1-2 for the Prototype Hydrogen category.

This was the first year Shell Eco-marathon Asia took place on the streets of Luneta Park in Manila, having previously been held at the Sepang International Circuit in Kuala Lumpur. The new urban setting is designed to test the boundaries of fuel efficiency in a real world environment. A total of 105 student teams from 15 countries across Asia and the Middle East participated in the event.

Participation in this year’s Eco-Marathon consisted of 12 on-track categories classified according to fuel types, with each fuel type consisting of Prototype and Urban Concept categories respectively. In addition to the on-track categories, a further six off-track awards were also on offer to test the teans on their technical and creative skills, as well as their approach to safety and sustainability. A panel of experts from various fields judged the students on a variety of categories that covered Safety, Communications, Technical Innovation, Vehicle Design, Perseverance and Spirit of the Event and the Shell Helix Tribology Award.

The ‘Shell Helix Tribology Award’, won by Team Monash 2, is an off-track award that recognizes student teams that demonstrate the use of lubrication engineering principles to improve the fuel efficiency result of their vehicles. According to the organizers, the winning team recognized the importance of keeping their vehicle components clean and lubricated and the importance of choosing the right viscosity, minimizing friction and maximizing fuel economy.
