Porsche 918 Spyder to make Frankfurt world debut

by -

Porsche’s hybrid-powered all-new supercar, the 918 Spyder, is celebrating its world debut at the upcoming Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA) next week. Lining up alongside it is a limited edition of the 911 to mark the iconic nameplate’s golden anniversary.

Other new models debuting at the Porsche stand include two new variants of the facelifted Panamera, namely the Panamera S E-Hybrid and the 300hp Panamera Diesel. Completing the Porsche line-up is the new 911 Turbo, also making its first public appearance there.

The world first saw the 918 at the Geneva Motor Show in 2010 as a concept, and the Frankfurt display car will represent the model in its production form. Punching out a combined 887hp from its petrol-electric powertrain, the 918 Spyder accelerates from rest to 100kph in 2.8 seconds. Capable of all-electric motion, thee 918 averages a rated fuel consumption of 3.0 – 3.3 l/100km.

The Frankfurt Motor Show plays a significant role in the history of the Porsche 911. It was fifty years ago that the original 911 debuted in this show, and it was 40 years ago that the original 911 Turbo made its first public appearance at the very same show. The significance of this occasion is not lost on Porsche, and it is appropriately milked by the simultaneous introduction of the ’50 years 911′ limited edition model together with the all-new 911 Turbo.

Based on the current 911 Carrera S, the limited edition ’50 years 911′ model sports the wide body of the all-wheel drive 911 variants but operates the traditional rear-wheel drive configuration powered by the regular model’s 3.8-litre six-cylinder boxer. As an obvious tribute to the original 911’s premiere year, this special edition model is limited to 1,963 units.

Pinnacle of the 911 range, the latest 911 Turbo debuts with a comprehensive array of technology including all-wheel drive, active rear-axle steering, adaptive aerodynamics, and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) to complement the 560hp pumped out from its twin-turbocharged flat-six.

An even more extreme 911 Turbo S is available, fitted with enhancements such as the Sport Chrono package, dynamic engine mounts, and PCCB ceramic brakes. Porsche claims that with standard production tyres, the 911 Turbo S laps the Nurburgring North Loop in 7 minutes 27 seconds. Both the 911 Turbo and 911 Turbo S have a rated New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) fuel consumption of 9.7 litres/100 km, which is 15% lower than before.
