In conjunction with the upcoming Hari Raya festive period, Michelin Malaysia has launched the 2013 edition of its ‘Fill Up With Air’ (FUWA) road safety campaign at Alamanda Putrajaya taking place from 12 to 14 July 2013. The three-day campaign aims to educate Malaysians on the importance of correct tyre inflation for reasons of safety, fuel economy, and tyre durability.

Michelin Malaysia believes that as much as 75% of cars on Malaysian roads are running underinflated tyres, and the FUWA campaign was consequently launched to remedy that. This is the second time Michelin Malaysia is organizing the FUWA campaign, having done so the first time in 2011.

“Under-inflated tyres have higher rolling resistance which requires more fuel to maintain the same speed. A tyre that is under-inflated by 20% can reduce fuel mileage by 20%. This means a loss of 8,000km on a potential mileage of 40,000km. Imagine the amount of fuel that is being wasted if your tyres do have have the correct air pressure,” said Beltran Yturriaga, MD of Michelin Malaysia.

“Checking and keeping the correct tyre pressure is straight forward and should be done at least once a month, if not more frequently but how often do Malaysian drivers do this? It is alarming to know that many still do not realize how under-inflated tyres can not only affect drivers’ comfort, fuel economy, and tyre life, but most importantly it can be a matter of life and death,” Yturriaga added.

Over the next three days, visitors of Alamanda Putrajaya can drive their vehicles to level four of the shopping centre’s car park at the North Department where Michelin personnel will be present to conduct free tyre checks and technical advice on maintaining correct tyre pressures. Other activities include a Road Safety Hunt and car simulation challenge, all designed to cultivate awareness on the role tyres play in road safety.
