Honda recalls 2003 Jazz and 2008 City

by -

In 2010, Honda Malaysia had recalled 12,935 units of the 2008 City and 3,090 units of the 2003 Jazz 1.4 i-DSI as part of a global campaign by Honda to rectify a potentially defective power window master switch. Now, three years on, the same group of cars are being recalled again as a follow-up to improve on the countermeasures implemented earlier.

During the initial recall in 2010, it was found that if exposed to rain (which can happen when you open your doors and windows during a heavy rain), electrolyte elements from rainwater that seeped into the power window switch assembly could short circuit the switchboard and create a fire hazard.

Honda kept tabs on the issue even after the aforementioned recall was completed, and initial test exercises, which covered thermal humidity and thermal shock tests showed no signs of problems. As time progressed however, it was found that tension around the sheet created a gap at the corner of the switch base, creating potential for water leakage into the switch area.

This time round, Honda will installing affected cars with a new acrylic-sealed power window master switch. The new acrylic seal has shape-following ability which Honda claims will offer better sealing against all possible intrusion of moisture.

As before, the recall affects 12,935 units of the 2nd generation City manufactured in 2008 with 7,713 units of VTEC and 5,222 units of i-DSI respectively. As for the Jazz, the recall affects 3,090 units of the 2003 1.4-litre Japan CBU model. Affected customers will be notified by mail once replacement parts are ready, and all relevant charges of the exercise will be borne by Honda Malaysia.
