Facelifted BMW Z4 launched in Malaysia

The facelifted BMW Z4, which made its world debut just a month ago, has reached Malaysia. Launched here in June 2009 with a choice of two six-cylinder engines, BMW had only updated the range last year with the introduction of two new variants powered by the company’s latest and highly-acclaimed 2.0-litre N20 twin-scroll turbo engine.

The new Z4 launches with only the 2.0-litre variants on offer, with the six-cylinder models dropped for the time being. Consumers can choose between the 184hp/270Nm Z4 sDrive20i at RM359,800 before insurance and the 245hp/350Nm Z4 sDrive28i M Sport at RM489,800. Both engines are carried over unchanged from the pre-facelift model, and it is the same state of tune found in so many other of BMW’s current models.

The excellent ZF-sourced 8-speed automatic transmission is standard on both variants and it enables the sDrive20i and sDrive28i to complete the century sprint in very respectable times of 6.9 seconds and 5.5 seconds respectively. Both models are quoted with identical fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emission numbers of 6.8 l/100km and 159 g/km respectively.

Three different driving profiles can be summoned at the touch of the Driving Experience Control switch alternating between Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ driving modes. Each mode activates different settings for the engine, DSC, automatic transmission, and Servotronic steering function.

BMW facelifts are typically subtle and usually require multiple glances to discern from the original, and the Z4 is no different. The slim headlamp assembly with bi-xenons as standard has been updated to feature the Corona rings LED daytime running lights pattern that has become the trademark of the latest BMWs. At the side, the fender-mounted signal lamps now feature a tapered surround blending into the airflow gills.

The more expensive sDrive28i comes standard with BMW’s M Sport package which includes the M Sport suspension, 18-inch M light-alloy wheels, and the M aerodynamics package. Inside, the Z4 sDrive28 M Sport comes with sports seat, Aluminium Carbon trim, and various M specific items such as the leather steering wheel, gear lever, driver’s footrest, door sill finishers, and anthracite-coloured roof liner.

An 8.8″ iDrive monitor occupies the centre console to enable access to the Z4’s full suite of BMW ConnectedDrive multimedia features that include various Internet-based social media apps, BMW Navigation System Professional, Bluetooth, USB/Aux-In, and BMW TeleServices.
