All-new Ford Mondeo makes Asian debut in China

by -

The all-new Ford Mondeo has debuted in Asia, with China being the first market to officially receive Ford’s new D-segment flagship sedan. Known as the Fusion in North America, the Mondeo is built on a new global platform that supersedes the predecessor’s EUCD platform that was also shared with Volvo and Land Rover.

We have seen and commented on the Fusion’s Aston Martin-inspired looks when it debuted at New York last year, and the Mondeo essentially reproduces that appearance. Up front, the Mondeo features the first-ever usage of adaptive all-LED lighting in a Ford vehicle, a feature which we only expect from German luxury cars such as the Audi A6 and BMW 7 Series.

Following the trend set by recent Ford models such as the Fiesta, Ranger, and Focus, the all-new Mondeo is similarly laden with technology, with a kit list that includes items such as Auto High Beam Control, Lane Keeping Assist, Active City Stop, Adaptive Cruise Control, Active Park Assist, and Blind Spot Warning (BLIS).

Not unexpectedly, the all-new Mondeo features the latest iteration of the Ford SYNC on-board entertainment and communications system. Available in English and Mandarin, SYNC with MyFord Touch® allows the driver to interact with vehicle systems such as climate control, radio, and CD-player through voice commands, an eight-inch colour touchscreen as well as a conventional button. Exclusive to the China market is an additional set of audio controls installed in the centre arm rest for rear passengers.

The Mondeo’s debut in China also coincides with the introduction of a new member of Ford’s growing EcoBoost family of turbocharged direct injection engines. Debuting in the Mondeo is a new 1.5-litre four-cylinder mill making 177hp @ 6,000rpm and 240Nm @ 1,500 – 4,500rpm. The alternative is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder making 228hp @ 5,500rpm and 340Nm @ 4,000rpm. Both engines will be mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

We do not anticipate to see the Mondeo arrive in Malaysian shores within the near future. Our stocks of the Mondeo are taken from Europe and latest reports point at the likelihood of a 2014 European launch.
