All-new BMW HP4 joins Motorrad range in Malaysia
BMW Group Malaysia has unveiled the all-new BMW HP4 motorcycle that continues on BMW Motorrad’s High Performance model series founded in 2005. Coming after boxer engine predecessors such as the HP2 Enduro, HP2 Megamoto, and HP2 Sport, the HP4 is the first four-cylinder motorcycle of the model lineage.
Featuring the water-cooled inline-4 engine of the S 1000 RR with a total displacement of 999 cc, the HP4 delivers 193hp @ 13,000 rpm and 112Nm @ 9,750rpm. On the road, these figures translate to a top speed in excess of 200kph and a century sprint time of 2.9 seconds. Fuel consumption is rated at 5.9 l/100km at speeds up to 120kph.
Riders can adjust the motorcycle’s characteristics by switching between four riding modes – Rain, Sport, Race, and Slick. The four riding modes have identical throttle responses, although the torque curve is smoothened between 2,500 and 8,000rpm in Rain mode for better control.
The HP4’s onboard electronics are supported on a CAN bus architecture networking the instrument cluster, and engine controller as well as the optional electronic immobiliser and anti-theft alarm. The instrument cluster sports a newly-designed dial face and displays an extended range of information and functions such as the Dynamic Damping Control set-up menus as well as the figures for Dynamic Traction Control fine adjustment and Launch Control Activation.
The HP4’s Dynamic Damping Control (DDC) system uses electrically actuated damping valves to continuously adjust compression and rebound to suit terrain conditions. Basic settings of the DDC are linked to the four riding modes with a softer damping specified for Rain and Sport modes as opposed to a tighter feedback-rich setup in Race and Slick modes.
Like many supercars, the HP4 is equipped with Launch Control system for the cleanest and quickest possible traffic light getaways. In order to ensure full acceleration from standing, Launch Control limits engine torque to allow maximum torque delivery as soon as the system detects a lift on the front wheel. This allows the rider to spend less focus on the throttle as the acceleration is controlled solely by the clutch.
The standard BMW HP4 is priced at RM144,444 on-the-road without insurance. There is the option for a Competition Package which offers refined HP carbon parts and wheels finished in Racing Blue Metallic with a special sponsor sticker kit. Specified with this package, the price then rises to RM158,888.
