Ford Kuga next to arrive in Malaysia

by -

The all-new Ford Kuga SUV will arrive in Malaysia this year, as confirmed by a press release sent out by Ford’s local office today. A launch date at the end of the second quarter was stated in the release and should that timeline be met, it would make the Kuga the fourth vehicle in a six-model offensive that Ford announced back in April 2012.

Produced in Valencia, Spain, the Kuga is based on Ford’s new global C platform that underpins the current generation Focus. Structural rigidity is ensured by the use of ultra-high-strength steel beams in the vehicle’s unibody. It recently garnered a five-star rating from Euro NCAP with an overall protection score of 88%, highest-ever for a mid-sized SUV.

Front-wheel drive variants are offered in some markets, but the aforementioned release also specifically described Ford’s global intelligent all-wheel-drive system to deliver best in class handling. This indicates that an all-paw drivetrain will at least be optional, if not standard, for the Malaysian market.

Engine options have not been disclosed, but a 25% reduction in fuel consumption has been promised. The release did not state a 25% reduction from which car, but we would speculate it to be the Ford Escape 2.3, which the Kuga will replace. An educated guess points at the direction of Ford’s EcoBoost engines, possibly the 1.6-litre version, but it’s all speculation on our part. We’ll keep you posted as more details trickle in.
