Together with the Hilux, Toyota has uprated the Fortuner with the more powerful 2.5-litre Variable Nozzle Turbo diesel engine as well. Quoted figures are identical to the Hilux, with 142hp @ 3,400rpm and 343Nm @ 1,600 – 2,800rpm.

The 3.0-litre diesel offered on the Hilux is not available here, but customers with a preference for petrol power can opt for the 2.7V model which remains on sale with minimal alterations. Its 2,694cc VVT-i engine produces 158hp @ 5,200rpm and 241Nm @ 3,800rpm.

All versions of the Fortuner come standard with a 4-speed automatic transmission linked to a full-time 4WD system with low ratios and Torsen LSD to give it a good balance between on-road refinement and mud-plugging abilities. The Torsen LSD enables the Fortuner to automatically vary front/rear torque distribution to suit prevailing grip conditions.

Based on the Hilux’s IMV platform, the Fortuner sits on a ladder frame chassis, featuring double wishbone suspension up front. A live axle goes to the rear, and it is suspended by coil springs with four links and a lateral control rod.

Like with the Hilux, there is minimal differentiation in appearance between the outgoing 2.5G and the newer VNT models save for the bonnet-mounted air scoop to draw air into the engine’s top-mounted intercooler. Toyota has also made chrome door handles standard with the 2.5G. Previously, this was a touch reserved only for the 2.7V.

Inside, the Fortuner’s cabin is cooled by dashboard and roof-mounted blowers to ensure better distribution of cool air to passengers, especially those sitting at the rear. The rear blower has a separate fan speed controller, and can be deactivated when not in use. Depending on variant, climate control is either manual for the 2.5G or automatic for the 2.7V.

The 2-DIN six-speaker audio system has been upgraded to feature Bluetooth connectivity to stream music and for use as a handsfree system. Mobile device connectivity can be facilitated through the AUX jack and USB port. The system is also MP3 and iPod compatible. Cost option upgrades of a DVD-AVN multimedia unit and rear seat entertainment system are available for selection.

Safety features in the Fortuner include its tough Global Outstanding Assessment (GOA) body, dual frontal airbags, laminated windscreen, ABS, load-sensing proportioning & bypass valve for its rear brakes, collapsible steering column and pedal box, and seatbelts with pre-tensioners and load limiters for the front passengers. Rear passengers get standard seat belts.

Prices (OTR with Insurance) of the Toyota Fortuner variants are as follows:
– 2.5G: RM171,288
– 2.5G TRD Sportivo: RM174,772
– 2.7V: RM179,007
– 2.7V TRD Sportivo: RM182,465
