Results of the 2012 International Engine of the Year awards have just been announced, with Ford’s new 1.0-litre EcoBoost proving to be this year’s big winner, taking home the New Engine and Sub 1.0-litre category awards along with the overall International Engine of the Year Award.

BMW engines also made considerable impact this year with its 1.6-litre Prince engine, 2.0-litre N20 direct injection engine, 3.0-litre N54 twin turbo, and S65 4.0-litre V8 winning a prize each. Several of the company’s other engines, namely the N57S tri-turbo diesel used in the new line of M Performance models, and the N55 3.0-litre twin-scroll turbo were also in the reckoning for honours.

Other notable performers in this year’s awards include Ferrari’s 4.5-litre V8 found in the 458 taking home the Performance Engine and Above 4.0-litre category awards. Volkswagen’s EA111 engine family earned three nominations in the 1.0 to 1.4-litre category, with the twincharged version getting the award and finishing second behind Ford’s 1.0-litre three-pot in the overall reckoning.
