Mazda CX-5 officially launched in Malaysia

Bermaz Motor has officially introduced the all-new Mazda CX-5 compact crossover SUV for the Malaysian market. Fully imported from Japan, the CX-5 is offered with the option of two variants – a front-wheel drive model at RM159,500.40 and an all-wheel drive variant at RM169,760.40, both prices inclusive of insurance for individual registration in Peninsula Malaysia.

With the exception of its driveline elements, both models are identically specced and offered with identical levels of equipment. So, if you missed the ‘AWD’ badge on the bootlid of the more expensive model, you will not be able to tell them apart – not without looking underneath for a rear drive shaft.

Mazda has specified a generous amount of kit in the CX-5, and items to look forward to include keyless entry and start, sunroof, integrated multimedia unit with touchscreen and sat nav, leather trim, electric driver seat adjustment, and a BOSE 9-speaker system among many creature comforts. Safety features include traction control, stability control, ABS, EBD, BA, tyre pressure monitors, six airbags, and ISOFIX mounts. Once again, all items are standard on both variants.

The CX-5 is powered by Mazda’s all-new and revolutionary 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G direct injection engine tuned to deliver exceptional fuel economy. The engine is noted for its impressive 13.0 compression ratio, and it is capable of taking fuel as low as RON 92. More advanced markets get this engine with a higher 14.0 compression ratio setting.

For the vital statistics, Mazda quotes two sets of figures for the FWD and AWD model. The front-driver makes 153hp @ 6,000rpm and 200Nm @ 4,000rpm, but the all-paw version makes 152hp @ 6,000rpm and 198Nm @ 4,000rpm. Mazda engineers questioned at the launch claimed that these figures are measured at wheel rather than crank, explaining why the AWD model has lower numbers due to additional drivetrain losses.

The CX-5 is the first Mazda to come with the company’s full suite of Skyactiv technological advances. Other items falling into this umbrella are the new six-speed automatic transmission and its all-new platform, which would serve to underpin a number of future Mazda models in the future. The overall approach is to keep weight down and minimize efficiency losses and consequently improve fuel consumption.

Response to the all-new CX-5 is said to be good, and Bermaz already has 600 orders in the book. Customers are looking at a waiting period of 4-5 months for their cars, as Mazda is simultaneously facing strong demand for the car worldwide and there is a limit to the number of cars that can be brought in due to quotas of available APs.

As part of its launch programme, members of the media had an opportunity to test the CX-5 from KL to Penang earlier this week. We will be publishing a separate test drive report of the car soon. Stay tuned.
