Maximize cost savings with recommended RON
KUALA LUMPUR, April 5, 2012 – With the latest RON97 price increment creating a gap of RM1 between the fuel grades, Chevron Malaysia Limited (“Chevron”), which operates the retail brand Caltex™, reminded consumers to choose the right fuel within respective recommended vehicle octane rating range to ensure maximized cost savings.
“Chevron’s emphasis is for consumers to select a fuel that best meets their driving and vehicle requirements, be it RON95 or RON97. However, if your recommended vehicle requirement is RON95 or lower, it makes the most money sense to adhere to this – getting a quality fuel that fits your needs. Using RON products greater than your engine requirement may not necessarily be the best for your engine, nor does it guarantee better performance,” said Jeremy Oh, Country Chairman, Chevron Malaysia Limited.
Research Octane Number (RON) ratings as recommended by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) are available in vehicle manuals, and sometimes, at the back of vehicle petrol filler lids.
With reference to misperceptions of power loss when choosing a lower RON product, Oh clarifies that an engine’s octane number requirement is defined as the octane number fuel that will produce the first signs of detectable knock (abnormal combustion) under the most severe speed and load conditions. As such, the harder one drives, the higher the engine’s octane number requirement.
“If you drive normally, avoiding wide open throttle acelerations, your engine’s octane number requirement will be lower than if you drive aggressively. Other factors, such as an inefficient cooling system or combustion chamber deposits, can also increase an engine’s octane number requirement. In such situations, a higher RON fuel is required if you want to enjoy better performance,” added Oh.
Caltex Premium 95 with Techron® and Premium 97 with Techron® fuels contain the exclusive and patented fuel system cleaning ingredient, Techron®, which is technologically advanced and specially formulated to clean your fuel system as you drive while minimizing harmful combustion chamber deposits. This ensures vehicle and driver can perform at their best.
