Super GT 2012 – More activities announced
It was announced back in February that the success of Super GT 2011 in Sepang has ensured that this highly-celebrated motorsports festival will have another round here in 2012. The event dates have been fixed at 9 & 10 June, and like last year, the organizers are promising a raft of activities to ramp up the hype.
The Super GT race itself will once again feature the GT500 and GT300 categories. Cars to expect include the Honda HSV and Lexus SC430 in GT500, whilst GT300 action will be populated by newer cars like the Audi R8 LMS Ultra, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3, Nissan GT-R GT3, Subaru BRZ GT300 and, for the first time ever, a Toyota Prius Hybrid GT300. Support races have also been lined-up, and confirmed ones thus far are the Toyota Vios and Yaris Cup, and the GT Asia: Asian Touring Car Series.
Meanwhile, activities planned off the track will include an attempt to once again set a Malaysian record for Largest Super/Performance Car Gathering and an Auto Saloon for tuning enthusiasts. In addition, there will also be a Super GT Motor Show with vehicles such as the Ferrari 458 Italia, Porsche 911, BMW M5, Chevrolet Corvette, Lamborghini Aventador and Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren.
Fans of Japanese culture will want to check out Akiba Town, a Japanese-concept, lifestyle-themed outdoor bazaar featuring booths selling various electronic devices. There will be photography workshops and Sony will will be bringing in racing simulators with the new Gran Turismo 5 racing game. F&B stalls will also be present, and like last year, all transactions will be performed via Touch ‘n Go cards.
Unlike many high-end motorsports fares, Super GT welcomes up close interaction of fans with its teams. Fans can go on the Pit Walk to meet the team managers, drivers, and not to mention race queens. Children under the age of 12 are allowed to enter free of charge and are to be accompanied by one adult, also free of charge. On Saturday night, there will a Musical Fiesta extraordinaire for the party-goers.
From now till race day, there will be a series of Super GT road shows to drum up interest of the event. These road shows will visit various shopping complexes and universities, bringing with them merchandises, activities and tickets to sell. Grandstand tickets are priced at RM 100 (Pit Walk and Music Fiesta not included) and upon purchase a coupon code will be given which will entitle you to a 20% discount off subsequent purchases.
