Shell Helix organizes special defensive driving course for compact cars
Thirty participants, selected from 100 entries received in the two-week Shell Helix D-Academy Facebook contest held in January 2012, were given the opportunity to attend a special defensive driving course catered for compact cars.
Organized in conjunction with the launch Shell Helix’s new HX7 E semi-synthetic engine oil, a seat in the course, held at MAEPS Motorsport Park in Serdang, is said to be worth RM1,000 per pax. The course imparted lessons to its participants both via theory and practical means.
Contents of the course start with basics such as seating and steering positions, then moving to more complicated matters such as braking techniques and skid control. Certain aspects of the course are specially fine-tuned for compact cars with less power engines and armed with fewer safety features.
After a one-hour theory session, the programme adjourned to its practical training where participants practiced the various techniques themselves behind the wheel, albeit in a controlled environment. To make things interesting, all participants were judged by instructors and points were awarded based on their performance in each exercise. Kenneth Chiew and Mark McVernon Young finished the day with the highest scores, and walked away with a Samsung Galaxy Tab each.
“Winning one of the two Grand Prizes was an unexpected bonus as I took part to refresh my knowledge. I like the Shell Helix D-Academy as the programme was comprehensive and everything was properly explained by the instructors,” said Chiew, who’s a motorsports enthusiast and have attended two other driver training programmes before.
Kuching-based Mark flew in specially to attend the course and found it to be money and time well spent, saying that, “I have to drive two and a half hours every weekend between my workplace in Sri Aman and my family home in Kuching. What I learned today would definitely help me on the road, although I wished the programme was longer.”
