TomTom introduces new GPS range for Malaysian market

TomTom has recently introduced a series of new portable GPS navigators for the Malaysian market. Clustered into two distinct product ranges, a total of five different models were launched, catering to buyers of various budgets and requirements.

Price-wise, options start with the three-model Via 200 Series, beginning with the Via 220 at RM499, progressively increasing to RM599 for the Via 260 and RM699 for the Via 280. All three models are offered with a map package that covers 7 Southeast Asia countries with a year of bonus maps. The 260 is differentiated from the entry level 220 only by its Bluetooth handsfree feature, while the 280 boasts a bigger 5.0″ screen against 4.3″ used by the other two.

A notable design feature of the Via 200 Series is its device-integrated folding suction mount along with its flip screen, which obviates the need of a separate clumsy mount. This feature has packaging benefits for TomTom as well – the box which contains the GPS unit is half as thick compared to those used by rival products. Further adding to the flexibility offered by its built-in mount, the Via 200 Series can be mounted in two possible lengthwise orientations with its screen display able to self-adjust accordingly.

For premium shoppers, TomTom offers the GO 2050 series, which consists of the standard GO 2050 at RM999 and the GO 2050 World at RM1,249. Both models are actually identical in features, being differentiated only by map coverage. While the standard GO 2050 has seven Southeast Asia maps, the World model has an extra 59 maps covering navigation in 66 different countries.

The 2050 has a 5″ touchscreen, but it does not feature a built-in mount like the Via 200 Series. What it has instead is what TomTom calls the Easy Click magnetic mount on which you can snap the unit in place using only one hand.
