Shell Achieves Guiness Record for Largest Ever Fuel Saving Lesson
Highest Number of Participants from Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR,15 October 2011 – Shell Malaysia in collaboration with Shell in nine other cities across Europe and Asia welcomed 3,243 drivers, to set a Guinness World Record for the ‘Largest Fuel Efficiency Lesson’.
The Malaysian event was held in Kuala Lumpur and brought together a total of1,225 participants for the training session, making it the highest number globally across 10 cities from 9 countries.
Organised to mark Global Shell FuelSave Day, the worldwide celebration of fuel saving saw 10 cities across Europe and Asia stage simultaneous training sessions for motorists to learn how to be more fuel efficient, learn how to save fuel and cut their driving costs. The lessons were staged in Allerød, Denmark; Bangkok, Thailand; Hamburg, Germany; Hong Kong, China; Istanbul, Turkey; London, UK; Manila and IloiIo City, Philippines; and Valkenburg, Netherlands.
The world record attempt was overseen by Guinness and a team of local adjudicators. The successful setting of a new Guinness World Record was officially announced at 7:00p.m.
In Malaysia, the event was held at 1 Utama Shopping Center and saw a host of games and F&B booths adding to the carnival-like atmosphere. The Global Shell FuelSave Day was attended by Azman Ismail, Managing Director of Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn Bhd and Shell Timur Sdn Bhd and was accompanied by Shell FuelSave Ambassador – Fahrin Ahmad, and the first ever Shell FuelSave Team Malaysia – three everyday drivers recruited from across the country to help inspire other motorists to be more fuel efficient.
In conjunction with the event, Shell Malaysia also organized the 2011 Shell FuelSave College Competition. The competition tasked private college students to plan and execute a communications campaign to promote fuel efficiency amongst their college mates, as part of the lead-up to the Global Shell FuelSave Day. HELP University College was announced as the 2011 Shell FuelSave college champion winning RM10,000 and a trophy. Coming in second and receiving RM5,000 and a plaque was Tunku Abdul Rahman College.
Encik Azman Ismail said, “To see so many people come together and set a Guinness World Record was fantastic. We know that motorists all over Malaysia are looking at ways to cut their driving costs, so I hope that through today’s celebration, we’ve been able to show them how easily this can be achieved by choosing the right fuel and making a few simple changes to their daily driving habits. Not all fuels are the same, and by using the right fuel for your respective vehicles will indeed impact the level of fuel efficiency and thus stretch your Ringgit further.”
During Global Shell FuelSave Day, the participants were also treated to entertaining performances by local artists such as:
• Malaysian pop and R&B singer Ning Baizura
• Winner of the One in a Million competition (in 2006) Suki Low
• Independent rock band Freeloaders Inc
• Percussion ensemble Diplomat of Drums, and
• Pop rock band Rosevelt
