Toyota Fortuner facelift launched

by -

Having just launched the facelifted Hilux, UMW Toyota Motor has continued their refreshing of the highly successful IMV range with the new Fortuner SUV. Like the Hilux, there is substantial alterations to its appearance, but nothing has been altered under its skin.

As such, engine offerings remain unchanged with the same 2.5-litre diesel and 2.7-litre petrol four-cylinder motors both continuing service, with a 4-speed automatic transmission standard for both. Both engines are offered with the option of TRD Sportivo trim, bringing the total number of possible variants to four; prices ranging from RM168k to RM182k.

Powering the 2.7V petrol model is a four-cylinder VVT-i motor delivering 158hp @ 5,200rpm and 241Nm @ 3,800rpm. The 2.5G’s diesel is the familiar one from the Hilux which has 101hp @ 3,600rpm and 260Nm @ 1,600 – 2,400rpm. Unlike the Hilux, however, the Fortuner uses a full-time 4×4 system with Torsen LSD which varies front/rear torque distribution based on driving and terrain conditions. The centre differential can be locked into a 50:50 torque split, and there is also the option between High or Low gear ranges.

The Fortuner’s new front end has been reworked to carry a similar appearance to the Hilux’s, but unlike its chief rivals, namely the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and Ford Everest, it does not have interchangeable body parts with its pick-up sibling. The side-mirrors now feature the customary built-in signal lights, and the tail lamps now are now of the Lexus-esque crystal wrap-around variety.

Those seeking a sportier appearance can opt for the TRD Sportivo pack, which adds an aerokit and stripes. A choice of four colours are available, which include the existing Silver Metallic, Medium Silver Metallic, and Solid White. The new colour of the mix is Dark Steel Mica, which replaces the discontinued Coal Black.

Inside, Toyota has opted to finish the cabin in a darker shade inline with current customer preferences. The 2.7V’s dash is lined with black woodgrain chrome plating, whilst the 2.5G gets silver finishing. A new 3-meter Optitron instrument panel is also in place along with a new 4-spoke steering wheel, complete with audio and info display controls for the 2.7V. The 2-DIN audio unit is connected to six speakers and features iPod, AUX, and USB connectivity.

Like any good 7-seater SUV, the Fortuner’s seating arrangements can be reworked into various configurations to suit different passenger and cargo-carrying requirements. The second row seats feature fore/aft adjustment, and little storage spaces are placed throughout the cabin to keep loose items. The 2.7V also has a 6-way electric adjusting driver’s seat.

When carrying a full complement of passengers, those seated at the rear will have their cooling requirements taken care of by ceiling mounted air-con blowers. A separate set of controls are available for those at the back to adjust their fan speed, and the rear blowers can be switched off when not needed. The 2.7V comes with auto climate control, whereas the 2.5G has a manual system, but with control dials revised for easier operation.

In the aspect of safety, the Fortuner’s frame meets Toyota’s in-house Global Outstanding Assessment (GOA) safety standards. Standard safety gear includes dual airbags, laminated windscreen, anti-lock brakes (ABS), Load-Sensing Proportioning and Bypass Valve (LSP & BV), collapsible steering column, anti-intrusion brake pedal and seatbelts for all seven occupants. For security, the Fortuner’s anti-theft system, which consists of an engine immobiliser, cabin sensor, tilt-sensor, siren with back-up battery and auto door lock, is benchmarked against UK Thatcham-1 standard.

Optional accessories available for the Fortuner are Premium Solar Film, a DVD-AVN system which includes DVD-Player, MP3, AUX-Jack, USB, iPod compatibility, Bluetooth, Navigation system, Reverse Camera, and a 6.1-inch colour monitor. The Navigation system adopts a gyro speed sensor that is able to operate when GPS signal is lost (e.g. passing through a tunnel). The map coverage includes Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore, with a 1-time free map update. Additionally, the navigation map is customized with Toyota Sales and Aftersales network.

Like all new Toyota models, the Fortuner is offered with a 3-year / 100,000km warranty. On-the-road prices for the new Fortuner range (private registration, metallic colour, Peninsular Malaysia) with insurance are as follows:
Fortuner 2.7V (P) A/T TRD Sportivo : RM182,488
Fortuner 2.7V (P) A/T : RM178,990
