Ford announces imminent arrival of new EcoBoost engine

Ford is set to update its product line-up in Malaysia soon, with arrival of the new Ford Mondeo Titanium and S-Max just around the corner. These new flagship models come with technologies that put them right at the top of their class.

Both models are built on Ford’s EUCD platform, and they will be powered by the highly advanced 2.0-litre EcoBoost engine which boasts turbocharging and direct injection. Built with the promise of ‘More Power, Less Fuel’, Ford’s state-of-the-art four-cylinder engine is able to improve fuel efficiency and emissions by up to 20% and 15% respectively.

These eco-friendly credentials come without the usual associated penalties in performance. The 2.0-litre inline-4 EcoBoost has a torque output that comfortably matches bigger naturally aspirated V6 engines. Inspired by the basic principles of Ford’s original 3.5 V6 EcoBoost, the new 2.0 EcoBoost engine boasts a generous spread of torque accessible from 2,000 to 5,500rpm.

“We are delighted about the arrival of the award-winning EcoBoost engine in Malaysia, starting with the new Ford Mondeo Titanium and S-Max,” said David Westerman, Regional Manager – Asia Pacific, Ford Export Operations. “The EcoBoost engines combine direct petrol injection and turbocharging in smaller-displacement engines to give customers outstanding fuel economy and reduced CO2 with the spirited performance they expect from a larger engine.”

In addition to turbocharging and direct injection, the 2.0-litre EcoBoost motor comes further equipped with Ford’s Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT). Typical of modern direct injection engines, the 2.0-litre EcoBoost squirts fuel into the combustion chamber at extremely high pressures. Its high pressure cam driven mechanical fuel pump operates at 2,200 psi, more than 50 times the norm in conventional 4-cylinder motors.

Unlike traditional turbochargers of old, the Ford EcoBoost turbocharger paired with direct injection is virtually lag-free, giving the driver access to instant and unadulterated performance. In its normal operation, the turbocharger spins at up to 200,000rpm, and is engineered for a life cycle of 150,000 miles (241,401km) or 10 years.

Moving forward, the EcoBoost engine will serve as a key element of Ford Motor Company’s global Blueprint for Sustainability. Current plants are for the EcoBoost family of engines to be offered in 80% of Ford’s models, supporting global sales of 1.5 million EcoBoost-powered vehicles a year.

“Ford is committed to delivering this technology to multiple vehicles so that more and more customers can take advantage of EcoBoost’s unique, no-compromise combination of power, performance and fuel economy,” added Westerman.

Building up to the EcoBoost engine’s imminent arrival in Malaysia, a microsite (www.ecoboost.com.my) has been launched to provide consumers with a better understanding of the engine’s unique technology with detailed articles and video clips. Users can also access reviews from leading automotive journalists such as Howard Walker, Peter Lyon and Mike Rowe.

Through the microsite, customers can also sign up for invites to exclusive test drive sessions of the new EcoBoost-powered Ford Mondeo Titanium and Ford S-Max.
