Minor updates for Porsche Cayenne and Panamera

by -

Porsche has just announced a series of minor updates to usher the Cayenne and Panamera range into their respective new model years. Upgrades for the Panamera will come in the form of added equipment whilst the Cayenne is presented with powertrain tweaks for the Diesel, S Hybrid and Turbo variants.

The Panamera now has smoked Bi-Xenon headlights including Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) and a redesigned tailpipe being new items available for ticking in the options list. “Wireless Internet access” will be optional from June 2011, while Lane Change Assist will be available from autumn 2011.

Changes are more extensive with the Cayenne. The Cayenne Diesel’s 3.0-litre V6 has received a raft of updates from the use of new materials to reduce weight by 20kg, lower frictional resistance to a revamp of the injection system. A new variable geometry turbo is in place with enhanced thermal management, optimized bearings and a new compressor wheel. Pressure of the direct injection system has been increased to 2,000 bar.

These seemingly minor updates have allowed the Cayenne Diesel to gain an additional five horses to make 245hp, and yet enjoy a six gram reduction in CO2 emissions to 189 g/km. Century sprint time and top speed are both improved to 7.6 seconds and 220kph respectively. Meanwhile, for the Cayenne S Hybrid, revisions are focused on the hybrid management system, which now removes the restriction of electric-only operation during cold starts.

Buyers of the Cayenne Turbo now have the option of specifying a power kit, which boosts outputs to 540hp and 750Nm. The power hike is achieved by a pair of new turbos with titanium-aluminium turbine wheels and adjustments of engine electronics. This upgrade gives the Cayenne Turbo an improved century sprint time of 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 281kph without incurring penalties in consumption and emissions. Also included in the power kit is improved cooling of the brakes and the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB).
